[Solved] How to remove compiz the LM 17.1 XFce?

Post by Creto »

Hello,
As the title:

How to remove compiz without removing these other packages in Linux Mint Xfce 17.1

These packages are removed along with compiz:

Code: Select all

cretomint@cretomint-1011CX ~ $ sudo apt-get remove --purge compiz
[sudo] password for cretomint:
Lendo listas de pacotes... Pronto
Construindo árvore de dependências
Lendo informação de estado... Pronto
Os seguintes pacotes foram instalados automaticamente e já não são necessários:
  compiz-plugins compizconfig-settings-manager python-compizconfig wmctrl
Utilize 'apt-get autoremove' para os remover.
Os pacotes a seguir serão REMOVIDOS:
  compiz* mint-meta-xfce* mintdesktop*
0 pacotes atualizados, 0 pacotes novos instalados, 3 a serem removidos e 2 não atualizados.
Depois desta operação, 304 kB de espaço em disco serão liberados.
Você quer continuar? [S/n]
As you can see, the packages: compiz* mint-meta-xfce* mintdesktop*, will also be removed, but of course I know that this probably break my system.

So I ask, is there any way to safely remove the compiz?

My PC is quite modest, so never will use compiz and I think unnecessary to have it installed.

Code: Select all

cretomint@cretomint-1011CX ~ $ sudo lshw -short
[sudo] password for cretomint:

Hello, Creto.

Why do you have to uninstall compiz? Simply do not use compiz, stick with the default xfce4 window manager xfwm4. Having compiz on your disk is not going to waste a lot of disk space. So there is not much to be gained by uninstalling compiz.
Just my 2 cents.

Cheers,
Karl

Hello karl,

As I said above, my PC is too weak and have no need to have already installed compiz I will not use it.

What's more, use the Mint for my work, needing to make new copies of it to other PC, many of them like mine, also weak.

Sorry my bad english.

Unless I'm mistaken, the mint-meta* packages are only used for dependencies. In other words, they don't contain any files or anything else your system may need, it's only there so you can easily install everything Mint installs by default. So, removing compiz will of course remove mint-meta-xfce but that only means that your installation isn't a "default" one.

I'm not that sure about the mintdesktop package though. I'm not at home so I can't see its description, but do take a look. Perhaps it's only used for dependencies, just like the mint-meta* ones.

EDIT: I see here that mintdesktop is the program that lets you configure your desktop. I guess you can configure some compiz options from there, and so compiz is a requirement for mintdesktop.

In this case, I guess you don't want to remove it after all, unless you can configure everything "manually" (by editing configuration files) and don't need the mintdesktop application.

This is why we talk about Mnt 17.1 xfce. And since the upgrade to Mint 17.1 xfce, I can confirm, compiz has found its way onto my filesystem, although I had not asked for it. :-)

And I guess Creto, the thread starter, will insist on having all the goodies and candies which Mint 17.1 xfce brings along, but without having Compiz lying around on the disk, doing nothing, but waste a few MB of disk space.

Yeah karlchen,

My dear everything is as said...

- I do not want compiz on my mint
- To my knowledge, yes, if I uninstall MintDesktop break the system

I will do so, install the Quina change the sources.list manually and add compiz on hold

Code: Select all

echo "compiz hold" | dpkg --set-selections
This is the only alternative that thought or better studied (heheheeh no, I am no power user)

Think might work karlchen?

I would think that updating from 17 to 17.1 would need to pull in compiz to satisfy dependencies, but I can't say for sure. mint-meta-xfce depends on mintdesktop which depends on compiz, so I imagine that updating mint-meta-xfce to the version in 17.1 would pull that all in. I'm not aware of a way to do a command line install with Mint so that you could install xfce on your own.

I'd still question why you need to remove compiz. If you're not using it, it's not doing anything except taking up a couple hundred MB on your hard drive. Linux Mint bundles a ton of applications and libraries that you are likely not using and probably amount to much more space than Compiz. If you are really looking for a "slim" install I'd recommend trying another distribution's implementation of Xfce like Fedora or even Xubuntu.

I tend to remove lots of stuff in Mint I don't use just so as to avoid wasting time with future updates. I removed compiz from the MATE version of 17.1 via synaptic. Can't remember what other packages it also removed along with it but everything still worked fine after.

Okay, I played around with this in a VM. The mintdesktop package is just the Desktop Settings tool that allows you to change a couple settings. In MATE this is somewhat useful since it provides access to a number of window manager tweaks, but in xfce it only allows you to switch between xfwm and compiz and enable or disable fortune cookies in the terminal. So I'd say it is safe to remove.

The only issue with the mint-meta-xfce package being removed is that, in theory, they could add dependencies to that package in future versions that could break your update path (like they did with adding compiz as a dependency). But you could always reinstall it to upgrade if you needed to.

That's right, before coming to read the topic had already removed the compiz and all was right

I uninstalled compiz and its derivatives and had no major problems, thank you for your attention
