Hi
I try to install google chrome via a .deb file . it seems to work but impossible to launch it ?

So I tried to install it via synaptic and by this way it works fine ! But I don't have the latest version of google chrome.

Does anyone could explain me this ?

had a version of chrome that was from the software library,
but wanted to update it.

trying to get any of the later chrome *.deb files to work, was difficult.
- never did get anything later than V30.x to work, successfully.

turns out, that google isn't supporting the Linux version, as much as it used to.

Not my experience at all... Google Chrome works flawlessly on all of my Linux machines, and gets regular updates, as always. Currently it's version 40.0.2214.94.

I'd just like to confirm Pjotr's experience with Google Chrome on my 17.1 boxes. Current Version google-chrome-stable 41.0.2272.101 on my machines, last updated/upgraded on 20th March through Update Manager, also installed (initially) from the Google site.

As I don't run LDME at present I can't comment directly on the OPs recent experience.

I install it on a SSD that I put on a 3 years old portable pc Acer . I made a usb stick with LinuxLive USB Creator.
It was quick and no difficulties . Great distribution and very nice desktop.

You should posting this in LMDE section , not in main edition.

I not using LMDE, but you can try terminal command dpkg
I forgot if LMDE use different root password like debian. But you can try :

sudo dpkg -i filenameyoudownloadfromgoogle.deb

post the output of error .

I just discovered, that on one of my machines the Chrome repo has disappeared from the software sources....

The Chrome on that machine didn't get updates, and now I know why. How on earth could it have disappeared from the repo list? *scratching head*

Anyway, when you have a similar problem, you can fix it like this:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome-repo.list

Add these lines:

## SOURCE FOR WEB BROWSER GOOGLE CHROME
## Only enable it when you've installed Google Chrome!
deb http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main

Save the file and close it.

Run Update Manager for retrieving the latest Chrome and you should be good to go again.

Keep in mind, if you install the Chrome stable repo and use it for the initial installation, Chrome itself will add its repo again on install. You can check this using

sudo apt-get update

On my machine it kicked out an error that I had duplicate sources. Removing the listing in the update manager that's under additional repositories (not the one that's in the Chrome folder under repos, that's the one Chrome installs itself, although it probably doesn't matter...) will fix this error.

Also note... if the Chrome repo is down (which happened right before the last update) apt-get update will give you a bad key error (assuming the Google public key is installed)... it resolved itself for me when the repo came back online.

Installed from .deb, Chrome has worked perfectly for me for some time now. Currently on 41.0.2272.101 too.
