Fsck Failed - fsck died with exit status 4

Postby vinoman » Thu Dec 04, 2008 3:10 pm

A friends PC running Mint 5 is getting these error messages:

/dev/sda1 Inodes that were part of a corrupted orphan linked list found
/dev/sda1 Unexpected Inconsistency . Run fsck manually (ie without -a or -p options)

root file system in read only mode
maintenence shell will now be started.

fsck died with exit status 4

What does that mean?

When I try running recovery mode it still goes back to the same screen.

What do i need to do to correct this problem?

Thanks, but I get a proxy error when trying to go the the link. :(

On my local LUG mailing list, I was given this command to fix fsck:

$ fsck -y /dev/sda1

it ran and looked like it may have corrected the problem, but then it told me to reboot and at that point all I could do was press the power button to restart the PC. At that point I get the:
Grub error 15 and then it just hangs there.

Now I can get even use a live cd to copy the old files off before installing. I'm don't know what to do now!
