HBOnow in Mint (personally: 17.1 Rebecca)

Post by MichaelChirico » Mon Apr 20, 2015 2:19 pm

After months of switching to Firefox to use HBOGO at the office, my household has cut its cable subscription (and HBOGO with it).

Now, I can't figure out how to watch HBONOW on my Linux machine anymore.

Firefox gives a Flash warning (as expected given what we know about Adobe's refusal to maintain the plugin):
HBONOW requires Flash Player version 17 or higher. Download FlashPlayer. -playbackTechError

Chrome seems to be fairing better but that seems a ruse--the "loading" icon never stops spinning, for me.

I've tried a few Ubuntu-oriented solutions (e.g. here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2273378); not sure if ubuntu-restricted-extras is something that ports to Mint.

Anybody have luck getting it up and running?

Still frustrated with Mint/Linux in general's stark difficulty handling modern content delivery.

1)
ubuntu-restricted-extras
are not needed in Mint, as Mint comes with it pre-installed.

2)

Your frustration is mis-directed . . it is the content providers who stick with proprietary delivery systems that are antiquated and should be replaced!

Fine, but either way the end user is being screwed--whether it's by the stubbornness of providers or the stubbornness of Linux development doesn't really mean all that much to me. I just want to watch some damn TV.

Your frustration with HBONow is not the fault of Mint, but rather with HBO. During their initial roll-out, they are only supporting Apple devices (ticks me off, too!). They will be opening up their stand alone services to non-Apple in June, I believe. This is information I got DIRECTLY from HBO... for the time being, no Apple, no joy.

It plays for me with Chrome on Windows, but not Mint.

Are you sure you're talking about HBONow (I.E., no cable/satellite provider req'd)? Even the ads I've seen for this service as recently as today (5/15/2015) speak of Apple products being required. Sure, HBOGo works fine if you can provide your cable/satellite provider... The general rollout for HBONow (standalone, no cable/satellite provider req'd) is due in June. I should know... the wife is gonna be jumping on that as soon as she can.

The Apple tie-up is for the REGISTRATION phase--you can't register for an HBONow account on anything but an Apple device.

My understanding is you're free to use whatever you want after that--I've gotten it to work on Windows and Chromebook*, just still having no luck on Linux.

*Well, sort of, if you count the patchwork approach inspired by reddit as "working"

So, for example, I used my girlfriend's iPhone to download the HBONow app & set up an account, which I now use on all other (non-Linux devices)
