Why would a VirtualBox installation not show up in /usr/lib?

Post by commandrix »

This is the output I get when I run the ls -Al /usr/lib command. Maybe someone could tell me 1) What's weird about it and 2) Why VirtualBox would not have put something there when I installed it.

But how was it installed, exactly?

I just downloaded the .deb file and ran it through the Package Installer.

That's scarey, downloaded from where exactly?
Why not use the Software Manager to install Virtualbox?

Does it work? IOW, did you actually install it?

If installed, this will show you where files were installed:
$ sudo synaptic -> click on virtualbox -> Rt-click: Properties -> Tab: Installed Files

Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Downloaded from this site here: https://www.virtualbox.org/

And I did try the software manager thing, then uninstalled that when it refused to work and tried the Terminal option too, and nothing really seems to be working.

Well, then it sounds like the reason there's no virtualbox file(s) in /usr/lib is that virtualbox is not installed.

Yeah, that's what the VirtualBox guys said too, but I'm sure I had it installed. Maybe Linux Mint 16 is just developing a bit of dementia here?

Mint 16 has no dementia - in fact it is obsolete since 9 months.

This is what I'm looking at right now. As you can see, I have the control panel for VirtualBox up. I just need to get the Virtual Machine to actually run.

You may have just gotten to the root of the problem. Mint 16 is obsolete. There are no updates for it, the repositories have been taken down, and if installing VirtualBox required installing any dependencies, the install would fail. First, upgrade to Mint 17, then try installing VirtualBox.

OK, I imagine there's a way I can just download Linux Mint 17 here? (I have a USB thumb drive I never use that I could probably make into a bootable.)
