Last update cinnamon went wrong
Hello,
After Idid the last update prio 1 cinnamon desktop. my pc got locked up and now I always get up in recoverymodus.
Im using the Nvidia drivers.
When I start up in recovery modus and try dpkg, it always give me the message:
couldn't find 'archive/ubunto.com/ubuntu/pool/main/x/xorg/....... and this for 4 packages.
I assume this is a problem within the update.
What doe I have to do to correct this?

Check your /etc/apt/sources.list file.

Same here. I installed the Cinnamon update. When I rebooted, Cinnamon had crashed and refused to start. Now I have removed cinnamon from my computer using synaptic (as well as about ten other packages recently updated).

Re: Last update cinnamon went wrong
Hello everyone, it happened to me too, I found the Cinnamon update in Update Manager, after upgrading it Cinnamon crashes and I get a message about running in fallback mode.
I was told in help chat channel that probably a script to downgrade to previous Cinnamon version will be given (crossing fingers and let's hope to fix this soon).
Anyway here is the apt log history about this update:
and here is my inxi -Fxz

Re: Last update cinnamon went wrong
Hey, guys.
Has anyone noticed that everybody is talking about the latest Cinnamon update, but no-one bothers to tell
+ which old Cinnamon version was updated to
+ which new Cinnamon version
Now I use Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon myself. And the last update I saw was from Cinnamon 2.4.5 to 2.4.8. And this was some weeks (or even months) ago.
But I spot a Cinnamon 2.6.3 beta version in the Rebecca (Linux Mint 17.1) Romeo repository.
Is it imaginable that some of you or all of you where a Cinnamon update has broken Cinnamon have enabled the Linux Mint 17.1 Romeo repository and that some of you or all of you have installed Cinnamon 2.6.3 beta? (youie definitely has done so.)
Provided this is the case, you have got 3 choices: as requested by Pjotr will give a useful concise overview of your system.
will reveal which repos you have enabled.
will display the installed Cinnamon version number.
And a final piece of advice at the end:
If you wish to test a beta version of a critical system component, please, do yourself a favour. Do not use your productive system for it. Use a dedicated testing installation instead. In case you absolutely must install a Cinnamon beta version on your productive system, then you should have a very recent complete system backup ready for restore.
Cheers,
Karl

Provided this is the case, you have got 3 choices:
- Either wait and hope that whatever it is that has a tendency of breaking Cinnamon in Cinnamon 2.6.3 beta will be fixed soon and will come to you through the Romeo repo soon.
- Or you disable the Romeo repo. Next you uninstall Cinnamon completely (have fun finding out all the dependent packages) and re-install mint-meta-cinnamon which should pull hin a complete Cinnamon 2.4.8.
If you are lucky there will be the mentioned script available soon that can do the downgrade from Cinnamon 2.6.3 to 2.4.8 properly. - You install Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon from scratch, do not enable the Romeo repo, and accept the available (stable) software updates, thus returning to the state where you were before the fatal Cinnamon update.

Re: Last update cinnamon went wrong
Hi,
Some unstable 2.6.x packages found their way into the main Rebecca repository today. We shut down the servers and restablished 2.4 in Rebecca as soon as we found out but apparently some of you were affected by this update.
There are two solutions to fix this issue:
- Downgrade the upgraded packages
- Or enable Romeo and upgrade to 2.6 fully (at the moment you've got a mix of 2.4 and 2.6, that's why it's not working).
If you can join us on the IRC, please do. I'll be on #linuxmint-help all night.
We'll also try to develop new tools in mintsystem to make downgrading easier. Please accept my apologies for this huge mistake and inconvenience. I hope we'll get everybody back safely on 2.4 or through a successful 2.6 upgrade.

@karlchen
Thanks for your non-helpful science. I did not open any Romeo repo. It was just plain update from cinnamon-desktop-data 2.4.2.
And please, do yourself a favour, stop treating users you don't know as dumb asses.
EDIT: this post has been written without seeing the one of Clem. Thanks to him for his message.

Hello,
Thank you all for the mostly positive responses (except one).
especially to glebihan to share us the code to do the downgrading.
Done that and everything is working nice again.

Re: Last update cinnamon went wrong
Hello, roger64.
This is why I had concluded - in particular from the commandline in youie's post - that some of you or all of you had deliberately included the Romeo repo and that cinnamon 2.6.3 might be to be blamed.
This turned out to be incorrect.
So all I can and will apologize for is for not being omniscient and for not taking into account a relevant piece of information which I did not have at the time of writing my post.
Karl
As you may tell from the timestamps of the posts, I wrote my reply without knowing that by accident the main Cinnamon 2.4.8 repo and the Cinnamon 2.6.3 Romeo repos had been mixed.roger64 wrote:Thanks for your non-helpful science. I did not open any Romeo repo.

Hi,
First of all:
- Thanks to glebihan for providing quick help (it's missing a few packages, libnemo-extension1 for instance and doesn't take into consideration whether you installed debug/dev packages, but it helped people a lot already)
- Sorry to everyone involved. This entire thing was my mistake, a stupid moment of inattention, packages introduced in the wrong repository. Servers were shut just ten minutes later.. we had an hour of downtime during which we fixed the issue, but it was too late already, some of you were impacted already.
Now, I developed a script which should scan your system for "wrong" packages and provide you with a command to fix them.
Save this script into a file called fix.py
Open a terminal in the directory containing that file and type:
Launch the script with:
The script should list all the packages which versions aren't installable and which have a version available in a Mint repository (in other words.. all the packages which version doesn't look right).
At the end of the output, if the script finds any such packages, a command will appear to fix these packages.
Review that command with attention and run it if it looks OK.

How can I start a terminal? I only get a desktop with Applications and Places. I can't find the terminal-launcher in the Applications-menu (That is weird)
Please discard this post. I managed to enter the terminal via nemo : open you home-directory with terminal. I run the fix.py and applied the changes. My system is running as before. Thanks for providing the script.
