What would be the PPA(s) that would need to be added to update manager so that I could automatically always have the latest version of Evolution email installed on my Linux Mint machine ?
No, I do not want to use Thunderbird.
Thanks.

Re: PPA for latest version of Evolution
Hi wpshooter,
"Latest" is a relative term in Linux. In the context of an LTS (long term support) version like Mint then latest means the latest version that will run on your system, which is not necessarily the absolute latest version.
If you "google" for "ubuntu evolution ppa" you will get lots of hits. Linux Mint 17.x is based on Ubuntu 14.04 code name Trusty Tahr or just Trusty. That is the relevant information to look at in the search results.

Why? What's the problem with the version of Evolution that comes default with your Mint version?wpshooter wrote:always have the latest version of Evolution

It has a habit of on random occasions of not opening the individual emails when they are clicked on. You can click on it again and it will open.Pjotr wrote:Why? 2: linux is very stable, but using untested versions of software (which is what using external ppas means really) is a very good way to make it less stable.
3: I may install software from a 3rd party ppa if it did something I could not do otherwise. For something like that, no way in hell. I don't use any ppas myself. The only thing I can think of that I may use one for in the future is for h.265 codecs.
Here's something every debian/ubuntu/mint noob should read (it's Debian but mint is ubuntu based (which is debian testing based) or debian based.

Re: PPA for latest version of Evolution
I know this is a bit necrotic, but I have the exact same question as the OP. My Evolution is from the standard Mint repository - v3.18.5.2.
It has quite a few undocumented features. I checked the Evolution website and it says that the Latest Stable Release is 3.20.5.
Maybe Linux is different and I just don't understand, but when I see "latest stable release", I don't expect that to be an "untested" version.
I can't seem to find a PPA for Evolution that will work with Software Manager to let me get the latest stable Evolution. I tried https://launchpad.net/~malept/+archive/ ... olution-bp and SM says "Cannot add PPA: "This PPA does not support xenial."" I'm pretty new to Linux and have no idea what xenial is.
I downloaded the tar file for 3.20.5 but the README doesn't say how to use it to install or upgrade Evolution. And I'd prefer to do it through Software Manager anyway. Unless, of course, 3.20.5 is not actually compatible with my system. I'm running Mint 18 w/Cinnamon.
Can anyone confirm or deny that there is a reason 3.20.5 is not in the standard Mint repository? And if it should be okay to use, how I can get my Software Manager to install Evolution 3.20.5?
Thanks!

I have no idea whether the newer version would work any differently, either. But, I DO know that the first step in trying to resolve a software problem is always to upgrade to the latest version. I make my living as a software developer. It is annoying and wastes my time when people contact me about a bug they found that is already fixed in a version that is newer than what they're running.Hoser Rob wrote: 1: you apparently have no idea whether a newer version would work any differently,

Re: PPA for latest version of Evolution
A few months back I went through this. I also want to use Evolution 3.20. I need it to do Google (gmail) 2 factor authentication. 3.18 does not support that, as far as I know.
The problem is Evolution 3.20 requires GNOME 3.20, GTK 3.20 and some other things I don't recall. Mint 18 is using 3.18 versions of these.
It is no coincidence that Evolution 3.18 uses GNOME and GTK 3.18; while Evolution 3.20 uses GNOME and GTK 3.20.
Installing the GMOME 3.20 stuff on my system made it very unstable while trying to get Evolution 3.20 compiled and working. I gave up and decided to wait for the developers to release something that is stable on Mint 18 (Ubuntu 16.04).
