Mintmenu extremely crashy lately

Hi there.

I've been using Mint as a primary OS for little better than a year. Love it.
Through my entire experience with Mint, mintmenu has been a bit dodgy. If I hit Super (otherwise known as the windows key [oops, I said a swear :) ] ),
mintmenu goes down. Do I want to reload it? OF COURSE.

That's not been much of an issue since I'm fine with clicking the button. Just annoying when I hit it by accident and the error disrupts whatever I'm doing.
For about a month now, mintmenu has been doing it on it's own. Usually on boot, it'll just not load with a nice message asking if I want to delete it from startup. NO FRICKEN WAY.

This latest issue is great deal more irritating. Now there's a giant hole in my bar on startup. Alt+F2 and throwing 'mintmenu' at it does exactly nothing as more seasoned people would expect. Only way is to right click, add the thing and reposition everything (adding a thing almost always displaces icons, even if locked)

I came across an article for (if I recall) Mint 13 with similar issues. I believe it involved deleting mintmenu's settings and rebooting. No effect. I should also mention this is happening for sure on 2 machines, but I'm certain quite a few more. One machine is my work box, the rest are my personal machines here and there. They're all 17.1 MATE fully updated (at least speaking of the two primary machines I know of for sure) and both running Compiz.

Now, I know my way around linux (more or less) but some of the terminal commands I still need to reach out to google for. I have vague ideas where to look for, but I'm afraid I'm a little lost for direction.

I know the feeling. :( I really loved Mint MATE with Compiz, but the Menu was doing all sorts of weird things (lagging, crashing, disappearing) that I decided to move to Cinnamon. I need my flashy effects!

Compiz has a bit of a reputation. Try switching to the "Marco" window manager by going into Control Center -> Desktop Settings -> Windows, and switching the window manager to marco. You won't have any fancy effects, but you will have a leaner, faster (and more stable) system.

I was afraid of that. Sorry, between mintmenu and compiz.. compiz stays :) Though I wish they didn't take out the burn animation :/
Thanks everyone for your input
