What is the best application for watching DVD's?

Personally I'd say VLC, I believe it can play near on any type of movie file type.
Linux Mint 17.3 (Cinnamon) 64bit.

although I find the default Totem works just fine. Don't forget to select "deinterlace" under the View menu.

VLC for an actual DVD as it supports menus, and SMPlayer for anything on your hard drive.
