Dropbox icon still not ok in Mint 17.2

Post by catch22 » Wed Nov 25, 2015 6:10 pm

Searching for a solution to get the Dropbox icon back on the panel, one can find many posts dating from way back.
Today in 2015 on Mint 17.2 the problem still seems to be persistent - all solutions appear to be temporary.
I do believe the fix needed is on the Dropbox' side, not Mint's (I read that eg Debian Jessie has the same issue, so...)
Of course I'm not blaming anyone; both Linux and Dropbox can be used for free, so I'm thankful for that :)

I was wondering if there is anything I overlooked in recent posts about this, or is it indeed an ongoing unsolved issue?

Ongoing and unresolved, despite Linux users hammering their forums with every single client release.

I'm using a workaround which works nicely with nvidia proprietary drivers, although it does have to be repeated for every update so I'm sticking with the stable releases to minimise the inconvenience (you could make the client folder read-only and prevent automated updates that way).

1. Go to the .dropbox.dist folder in your /home directory and delete or rename libGL.so.1

2. Create a symlink to the libGL.so.1 file in the nvidia driver directory. Open a terminal in the .dropbox-dist folder and:

Code: Select all

ln -sf /usr/lib/nvidia-346-updates/libGL.so.1 libGL.so.1
(Substitute "346-updates" with whatever version of the driver you're using)

3. Logout & login.

Thanks Paladin2019, but I don't have the folder /usr/lib/nvidia-346-updates, from which I deduct I don't have nvidia drivers?
I guess I'll have to be patient till the dropbox-doctors find a cure :|

You need to point the symlink towards the drivers that you are actually using. Not tried it myself, but you could aim it towards one of these:

64-bit
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1

32-bit
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1

There are two things different I see in my box.
The location of the libGL.so.1 that I found is one folder deeper in:
.dropbox.dist/dropbox-lnx.x86_64-3.10.11/
I changed the name to libGL_OLD_._so_._1_zzz .

In /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/ I found this file: libGL.so.1.2.0
so I went back to .dropbox.dist/dropbox-lnx.x86_64-3.10.11/ and did

Code: Select all

ln -sf /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1.2.0
Logged out/in - no change :?
EDIT: 1 second after posting I see my mistake - will repair and be right back :-)
EDIT: back already 8)

Code: Select all

ln -sf /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1.2.0 libGL.so.1.2.0
log out/in, still no change.

Almost there. It needs to be called libGL.so.1

Code: Select all

ln -sf /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1.2.0 libGL.so.1
No guarantees, like I said I haven't tried it myself and it's based on a best guess. BTW I'm using XFCE

Still no result (Cinnamon here)
Back to the patience-plan it is.

Even though 17.2 Cinnamon, which I'm using right now, has the dropbox problem (I just noticed it missing right now LOL), I never had a problem with Dropbox icons disappearing in either 17.2 XFCE or 17.2 Mate. As far as I know, it is just a Cinnamon problem (I didn't try KDE long enough to notice Dropbox disappear).

To get the dropbox icon back in Cinnamon (sorry but this will have to be done each time it disappears), open a terminal and enter the following commands...

Code: Select all

dropbox stop

Code: Select all

dropbox start
It works for me in 17.2 Cinnamon when the icon disappears.

Or, if you don't want to deal with it continuing to disappear, install 17.2 Mate instead of Cinnamon. Mate is much more stable in my experience, but it doesn't have all the cool features of Cinnamon.

Did you install from the Dropbox website? I am sure I installed from the website and haven't had a disappearing icon but I just have Intel graphics using Cinnamon 17.2

I've tried installing from the Dropbox website, on my 17.2 Cinnamon computer with Intel "Haswell" graphics. The installer itself is newer than the installer in the software manager, but they both install Dropbox version v3.10.11 from what I saw.

Changing to Mate seems like a drastic measure for a minor issue, but I'll keep it in mind.
Thanks for the stop/start-tip!
It works for getting the icon in the panel, but also gives these error messages:

Code: Select all

libGL error: dlopen /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libdrm_radeon.so.1: undefined symbol: drmPrimeHandleToFD)
libGL error: dlopen ${ORIGIN}/dri/i965_dri.so failed (${ORIGIN}/dri/i965_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
libGL error: dlopen /usr/lib/dri/i965_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/dri/i965_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
libGL error: unable to load driver: i965_dri.so
libGL error: driver pointer missing
libGL error: failed to load driver: i965
Possibly it has to do with the former libGL-linking I did?
(earlier mails in this thread about symbolic link to driver)

BTW I suppose that linking business has nothing to do with another issue I've got here?

I guess not, but just mentioning it just in case it does  and someone would afterwards say: "Why didn't you mention that in the beginning :?: "

If the HDD mounting problem started right after the changes you made in linking, then there is a strong possibility they are related. Another possibility I consider less likely is that if you updated right before the HDD mounting issue, then perhaps an update might have broken it. Is there anyway you can undo the linking you did earlier?

Yes! Undoing the linking and rebooting solved that :D

I think I 'may' have solved this. I have now got two entries for Dropbox in my startup application list, menu>preferences>startup applications. I have one called Dropbox Stop with the command 'dropbox stop' and a delay of 10 and another called 'dropbox start' with a command of 'dropbox start -i' and a delay of 15. I now have the panel icon available.

Early days but i'll see if it stays.

BTW this is in Mint 17.3 64 bit
