Chrome fails to download

Post by Wheelspin »

I've just upgraded to 17.3 and the first that appears in the package manager is Google Chrome. I try to install it and get this:
W: Failed to fetch http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/p ... _amd64.deb
404 Not Found [IP: 216.58.211.174 80]
I tried with wget and got the same thing.

I'm not sure if this is a Google issue or one for the Mint/Ubuntu repository managers.

No, because that would sort of defeat the point of using the repos.

Is it only Chrome that's giving you a problem?

Another, possibly related oddity has occurred. I clicked the Refresh button in the Software Manager and the Chrome update disappeared and was replaced by the two Mint Update upgrades that I'd previously installed.

ok, I managed to work around the Chrome issue (without resorting to a manual install) by simply removing and reinstalling it through the package manager. There's still a problem with the update process though. Will be interesting to see if it re-surfaces when Google release the next update.

The issue with the Mint Updates appears to be separate as it is still occurring and is interacting with more than just the chrome update so I'll start a separate thread for that.

Looks like I spoke too soon. After a couple of reboots the update came back. Checking the chrome version shows that it's back to v46 again. so, I ran these tests:

1) Remove chrome.
2) Install chrome
3) Version is 46.

1) Remove Chrome
2) Disable Google Additional Repo
3) v46 Chrome still in the list.
4) Re-enable Google Additional Repo.
5) v47 Chrome is now in the list and v46 is not visible.
6) Install Chrome, run it and check version. It's v47.
7) Reboot.
8) run Chrome and check version. It's v46.
9) Check Chrome version in the package manager. It's v46.

confused?

Oh, I did a full update and upgrade from the CLI too and then re-tried the second test. Same result.
