Anyone able to install the PIA [VPN] software in Mint 17.3?

Post by grizwald »

Hi All,

Has anyone been able to install Private Internet Access software in Mint 17.3? I have tried many methods each time without any luck.
The latest attempt recommended by PIA help desk is shown here....

https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/f ... -debian/p1

All goes well using this technique until I get to the part.... "sudo nano/etc/ etc etc etc..... where it crashes.

The message on the terminal screan says " Command not Found ".

I am using a Samsung Laptop using a fresh copy of 64 bit Cinnamon Mint 17.3 on a new 1TB hard drive. I re-installed 17.3 to remove the carnage from earlier attempts.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

G.

Wow that's a complicated setup. So your command is to simply edit a file using the "nano" editor which is not installed by default in Mint I believe. Just replace nano by gedit, that will do the something.
Btw did you already pay them ?

HI "grizwald",

You are like the 3rd person this week to ask (post) about getting Private Internet Access (PIA) up and running. Your link is their preferred way of getting their VPN service installed and running.

User "marlenejo" is right regarding the error, you just did not have the same "editor" (Nano), that the instructions used, either install "nano", or use the Cinnamon default editor "gedit" instead of "Nano" in their instructions.

And, since P.I.A. is a "paid for" VPN service, you have to have paid them first, to get your user name and password, or it will not work. There are good free VPN services available as well, but PIA is considered a very good one.

Hope this helps ...

Have you tried the PIA VPN App - Linux Beta

https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/f ... linux-beta

Currently using it on 2 Machines running Mint 17.3

Good Luck

Thank you both for your response and your help,
The fact that 'nano' isn't installed sure made a difference. Earlier I tried a script from the PIA site which sort of worked after a fashion.
https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/f ... ux-beta/p1
I was able to load something and eventually able to place the larger PIA green icon in the bottom tray.
Clicking on it produced a smaller red icon on the opposite side of the tray.
Yes I have paid for the service [and added my details when prompted to do so] and IF I'm quick it sort of works OK.
Meanwhile I'm using my Mint 17.1 which has PIA VPN working perfectly. Looks I'm going to do yet another fresh 17.3 installation on
this computer and try the whole process yet again, this time using gedit instead of nano. I'll report back with the progress in a day or so.
Thanks again to you both for your help.
Grizwald.

Hi "grizwald",

You are welcome.

You should be able to get this working with the newer Linux Mint version since you already have it working on the older version. Let us know if you have any further questions...

Good luck and keep us posted...

Re: install the PIA [VPN] software in Mint 17.3? SOLVED.

Hi All,

I have finally got the PIA VPN working albeit not quite as before with older versions of Mint thanks to the PIA help department.
They suggested following the procedure

https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/f ... -debian/p1

I managed to lead myself astray several times but eventually..... with the help of PIA help, we are sort of back on track.

Thanks to everyone for their help, I think I'll persist with the present setup.

Cheers,
G.
