[Solved]Gparted not working with Cinn. 17.3 64bit

Postby RamBurner » Wed Dec 23, 2015 9:01 am

Gparted is not working anymore with 17.3 Cinnamon 64bit. It initially asked for your password which is normal, but it does no more than that.
System Monitor will not start either.
System:
CPU: Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz
RAM: 6GB
Video: AMD HD5770
Hard drive: ADATA 120GB SSD

Everything else works fine, I have uninstalled Gparted, reinstalled it both from the Software Manager as well as Synaptic Package Manager.

See it as a blessing in disguise. It's safer to use GParted only from within the live session of the Mint DVD. Reason: then it operates completely free from the hard disk it's going to do tasks on.

Correlation or coincidence? What else does not work?

What does "no more than that" mean? No gui showing? GUI not responding?

I don't use it for doing things to the Mint drive. I have 4-1TB drives and a 250GB SSD I run Windows on, as well as external drives I use it on.
I'm wondering if the current stable version of Gparted will run with 17.3 Cinnamon when installed. The one in the Mint/Ubuntu repos is very old.
I'm wondering why it works with the live Mint but not the installed Mint after it updated.
Was it an update to Cinnamon that caused the malfunction?

It asks for the password to start it, but the program does not start. Cursor icon spins for a bit then stops, program never starts.
The same thing happens with System Monitor.

Open a terminal and enter (one after the other):

Code: Select all

gparted-pkexec
gnome-system-monitor

/usr/sbin/gpartedbin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgiomm-2.4.so.1: undefined symbol: _ZN4Glib11VariantTypeD1Ev

gnome-system-monitor: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgiomm-2.4.so.1: undefined symbol: _ZN4Glib11VariantTypeD1Ev

Those are the results

I think I have found the cause and the solution for this.
It is VMware workstation that had created a file that cause problems.

How did you get this? In the bug report is Ubuntu 15.10 mentioned, but the base of LM 17.3 is Ubuntu 14.04.

It seems as though it was caused when I installed VMware Workstation 12.1 Pro.
I had problems with VMware Workstation 11, so I got the new 12.1 and it worked fine. I hadn't attempted to use Gparted until now.

This was what worked for me and now Gparted and System Monitor work fine.

"A variant of trinkity's solution finally worked for me:

I deleted LD_LIBRARY_PATH.conf file in /etc/ld.so.conf.d

and then executed the command $ sudo ldconfig"
