This time do not apply the other updates, if the update manager reappears, but open the menu help -> about and report, which version it shows after the update. I guess, that it will still show 4.9.3.2. If this is the case click the refresh button in the update manager window, I assume, that those 2 updates will reappear.
It shows 4.9.3.3. Refresh stills shows the list of new updates.
There is now a new entry in the history:

Code: Select all

And what is the situation now after a reboot?

After a reboot, mintupdate has reverted to 4.9.3.2, the 4.9.3.3 deb is gone from the apt archives and the history has reverted to its previous state.

That is silly. No, not you, I mean the situation. :wink:

Does this happen to be a virtual system?

No, it's installed directly on the hardware.

I admit, that I do not have a plan, just poking around.

You might reboot into the live system and check the apt-cache folder, if the new deb files are still there or already deleted. This will make clear, if the "reset" gets done during shutting down or booting.

I know my stuck-in-a-loop Update Manager problem was slightly different than the one in focus here (described earlier). But I did solve my problem by updating dependencies. I didn't see this idea mentioned in any of the previous posts...maybe it could help Wheelspin's problem too.

I used the following command:

sudo apt-get -f install

Bingo! mint-upgrade-info version 1.0.4 finally installs and fetches all the new updates. And all of those updates successfully installed too. Hope this helps.

@Locutus of Borg:
Fine that you solved it. I wonder, if you never got error messages regarding missing dependencies; at least you never mentioned them.

I did not see any dependency warnings, but I cannot say with certainty they didn't appear (I could have simply missed them). What I am sure of is this: when alerted that some updates could not be downloaded, and asked if I want to continue anyway, I selected "yes". Perhaps that was not a good choice, since it could have caused the dependency issues that led to update malfunction (the Synaptic Package Manager would not open either). From now on, I'll pay close attention to missing dependency errors or warnings.

ok, I've booted into a live system.

While here, I tried to run a filesystem check from gparted but got errors about setting superblock flags. Log is below because this forum has ridiculously paranoid attachment rules:

Code: Select all

$ sudo fsck /dev/sda6
fsck from util-linux 2.20.1
e2fsck 1.42.9 (4-Feb-2014)
/dev/sda6: recovering journal
Superblock needs_recovery flag is clear, but journal has data.
Run journal anyway<y>? yes
fsck.ext4: unable to set superblock flags on /dev/sda6

/dev/sda6: ********** WARNING: Filesystem still has errors **********

Did you ever have a power failure or did you hard reset the computer (holding the power button for some seconds)? This could be the cause for the superblock problem.

You should now at first make a complete backup of your home on an external drive.
Than try this.

Hmm, there was a power failure a few weeks back.

I tried the advice in the article you linked but whenever I try to restore the superblock backup I get:

Code: Select all

$ sudo e2fsck -b 163840 /dev/sda6
e2fsck 1.42.9 (4-Feb-2014)
Superblock needs_recovery flag is clear, but journal has data.
Recovery flag not set in backup superblock, so running journal anyway.
/dev/sda6: recovering journal
Superblock needs_recovery flag is clear, but journal has data.
Recovery flag not set in backup superblock, so running journal anyway.
Superblock needs_recovery flag is clear, but journal has data.
Recovery flag not set in backup superblock, so running journal anyway.
e2fsck: unable to set superblock flags on /dev/sda6

/dev/sda6: ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****

/dev/sda6: ********** WARNING: Filesystem still has errors **********
It doesn't seem to matter which superblock backup I try to restore.

The power failure is most likely the cause for the problem.

I don't know another solution.

If nobody else chimes in you need to reformat the partition and install Mint anew.

The installation fails when trying to format the partition.

I dropped out and ran gparted to do it manually and something interesting happens. I delete sda6 (/ partition), sda5 (swap) and sda3 (the containing extended partition) and leave sda1 (the 100mb system reserved partition) and sda2 (my Windows install) alone. I then execute the operations, which claims successful deletion. gparted then refreshes the partition list and all three deleted partitions reappear.

Is this likely to a partition table issue, meaning I need to wipe out my Windows install too or a faulty drive (its an SSD if that makes any difference)?

ok, even creating a new partition table doesn't remove any partitions!

I did never come myself into such a situation, but I fear this is the case. Only a new partition table will (hopefully) bring you back to a working drive.
