Linux Mint 6, acer Aspire One, Firefox not starting at all

Postby DJM » Thu Jan 29, 2009 3:26 am

Need help please,
I Installed Linux Mint 6 on my acer Aspire One. Everything runs well and smooth.
But Firefox won't start at all. No error messages, no "starting Mozilla Firefox" tab, nothing.
The same happens with Seamonkey. Even the harddisk pilot lamp doesnt blink.
Thunderbird runs without problems.
Opera runs without problems, and plays Flash contents.
I read that others had problems with their flash plugins for Firefox. I did what was suggested, removed the default flash plugin completely and installed a new flash plugin. Still no Firefox.
I can go online with opera, its a very good browser, but i'm used to firefox. And I can't keep help wondering what the problem really is.
Thanks in advance for any help.

That's odd
Luckily Linux has a simple but efficient built in debug tool - the terminal :)
Use the terminal to start Firefox (the command is simply firefox )
Then look for error messages in the terminal - you may find the answer there or at least you can post it here

in the terminal:
#firefox
...didn't do anything, no error mesages, nothing.
but :
#sudo firefox
...and firefox runs.
What is wrong, and how do I fix it?
thank you

NEVER EVER RUN FIREFOX AS ROOT!
To test if it starts and immediately close it down is OK
This is the behaviour in Windows and one of the reasons viruses spread so easily
But we have established that it is a permissions problem.
As you can use Opera no problems this is not urgent so I'll come back to you - I have not been able to do much in the forum a couple of days and the list of posts I have to go through and answer has grown long ..... but I'll come back :)

running the linux mint 6 live cd from usb on the aspire one:
firefox runs, no problems (using it now).
next step: trying to re-install linux mint 6
i hope this will solve it.

You know computers are a bit like living organisms - you never really know what will happen.
This is because there is an element of randomness - just as this or that important file is written there's a power spike (or brown out) and it does not go well.....
