Been searching around for an answer to my issue and haven't found it yet.
I am ripping a DVD video with VLC media player. The DVD is 4.2 gig and I started 8.5 hrs ago. Still ripping and the mpeg-4 file is now 5.5 gig and still growing. I have tried K9, K3b, DVD::Rip, Handbrake, and Acidrip before VLC. None of those would work. They all error one way or another.
Any pointers?

Re: VLC ripping DVD issue
I have never tried ripping with VLC or any of the others you mentioned. I use MakeMKV to rip the disc and then use Handbrake to shrink the size and convert it to a format I want. It works very well for me.
Give MakeMKV a try.

Hi "Destry",
I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.
Make sure you have installed from the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM):
"ubuntu-restricted-extras", mencoder, mpv, ffmpeg*, melt, h264.
1.) +1 to post by user "z31fanatic". "MakeMKV" is awesome for making back up copies (Ripping) of your DVD/Blu-Ray Discs, and using Handbrake to shrink even further.

To install this using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:heyarje/makemkv-beta
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install makemkv-bin makemkv-oss
2.) You might be able to use "K3b" to rip movie DVD's to video ".iso" files using the "copy" option, then select to a file only option. Various multi-media players and media servers can play the video ".iso" files, including VLC. I have done this before with success.
3.) The newer version of ""K9copy" called "K9copy Reloaded" can also "Rip" as well, so can the original if it is not a dual layer disc.

It would not hurt to have the most current edition of FFmpeg as well:

Hope this helps ...

One thing you might try with Handbrake is
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

Re: VLC ripping DVD issue
Thanks phd21!
I just followed your steps to install MakeMKV and the first link for how to rip DVDs - worked very nicely and I am able to play the video easily with VLC. (Mint 17.3 Rosa - MATE 64-bit.)
