google chrome update errors (SOLVED)

Post by jacpra »

Hi, all
Thank you for reading and any help

Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa , 64 bit here.
Download manager updating "google chrome" provides the following errors:

"Failed to fetch http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/d ... le/Release Unable to find expected entry 'main/binary-i386/Packages' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file)
Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead".

I tried: in Download manager "open edit software sources--password--Maintenance--Fix merge List problems--update cache

but could NOT fix the problem

Thank you very much

You have 64-bit system so 32-bit source does not work on you. Edit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list file as

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list
... the contents

Code: Select all

### THIS FILE IS AUTOMATICALLY CONFIGURED ###
# You may comment out this entry, but any other modifications may be lost.
deb [arch=amd64] http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main
... save and quit
Ctrl o
Ctrl x
... update apt cache

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

This is supposed to have been fixed by an update weeks ago. I wonder why the OP's wasn't.

The 32-bit version of chrome is discontinued by Google. Install the 64-bit version instead or use 32-bit chromium instead.

Hello, I read where I should look for posts related to my topic before starting a new one, and this one matches pretty closely.
I installed 32 bit Chromium on Mint 17.3 (I installed the 32 bit version), but switched to Firefox. The problem is that I keep getting the same "failed to fetch" message. I have uninstalled Chromium, but the message keeps popping up every time I have or refresh the list of updates.

Is there something else I need to uninstall that I have missed?

Oh sweet mercy, thank you! It was driving me nuts!
Of course, now I feel like an idiot, because I had completely overlooked the "Google" repository the entire time. It was right in front of my face. /facepalm

Once again, thank you, jimallyn. :D
