Installing MS-Office 2010 on Wine

Post by hackerman1 »

I have tried to install MS-Office 2010 on Mint 17.3.
I have searched for instructions, but i have only found old instructions for other versions & other distros like Ubuntu.
I have installed Wine.
And i have followed the instructions that i found: "right-click the setup-file and select to open with Wine".

The installation starts, i entered the product-key, and everything looks "as usual" (as on W7).
But then it stops: "the installation has encountered an error".
I know that the setup-file is OK, because i used it just a few days ago to install Office 2010 on W7.

Below is the backtrace-log:

Re: Installing MS-Office 2010 on Wine

Post by Pepi »

If you ever get this to work you will be up for an award  I finally gave up installing MS apps on WINE. Sometime you get them installed but then you find important things you need that don't work  I've switched to VirtualBox and now I can run the MS apps I need. Really the only one now is Photoshop. I've got use to all the other similar Linux apps.

Good luck

Have you tried Libre Office ? One of the reasons my wife was resistant to switching from Windows to Linux is that she was/is a heavy user of WORD and Excel. She has been on Linux for almost two years now and Libre Office works for her. It reads MS Office doc with no issues and can produce doc with .doc extension if you wish - you choose. I am not explaining this very eloquently but Libre Office can read and write in .doc as well as in it's .odt. You can append whichever extension you like to the same doc or even have both a .doc and .odt, Obviously if you are operating in the MS word you would append the .doc to it.

That said I will tell you there is a learning curve albeit not much of one not unlike going from one version of Office to another. The other thing that I have read about but have not experienced so have no personal experince with is that if you use a lot of complex macros in you documents there is something like an 85% compatibility between Libre Office and MS Office.

The last thing I would say - and take it with a grain of salt as this is pretty much opinion based on discussions and what I have read but not based on actual experience, empirical data or actual research to which I can reference.
1.) Wine sounds great in theory but few people have satisfactory success with it - there is a commercial version which is "supposed" to be better but seems to have mixed results.
2.) Putting Wine on you pretty secure and stable Linux system may open you up to some Windows vulnerabilities - at least I have heard that repeated enough time to be skeptical of Wine.

Yes.
I have tried different versions of Libre Office the last couple of years on WS2008-R2.
Yes, Libre Office can replace MS-Office 2010 for Word , Excel & Powerpoint-files, but it can´t replace OneNote.....
I can live without the rest of Office 2010, but i need OneNote working on Linux.
If i also can get Outlook working would be nice, but not required.

And my question was "Installing MS-Office 2010 on Wine", i didn´t ask for alternatives...

There is nothing wrong with the setup-file.
I used it just a few days ago to install Office 2010 on W7....

I don't hold much hope for this project.

This is an old thread, but some of the hints, like using winetricks, might get the installation working: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1885051

Easy there, mate. :) Sometimes you can't use Windows tools in Linux, and alternatives are the only solution.

Now as to your question...
Last I heard, Office 2003/2007 were about the only Offices that would work pretty well in Wine.
This article says that it can install Office 2010 through Wine and Play-on-Linux, but since it was written for Mint 14 it's pretty old and might not work now. It still might be worth a shot, though.

Lastly, majpooper has a good point--using Wine can open up your nice, clean Linux install to Windows nasties. For some people it's worth the risk; for others (like myself) it isn't. Definitely give some thought to whether the benifits outweigh the risks for you!

Regarding OneNote: Did you try Linux-alternatives like Cherrytree?

Please keep this thread on the subject !
I am not interested in any alternatives.
I want to install Office 2010 (or at least OneNote) on Mint 17.3.

If you have any information that can help me do that, then please post it.
Otherwise post your suggestions for alternatives somewhere else...

the commercial version of ./wine often works a little better:

you can also use Play on Linux:

but - often the older version of M$o work better than the more recent versions,
- particularly under a Linux or Mac system.

I had excellent luck with Office 2007 under PlayOnLinux, which even has an exact option for installing that version of Office. Have never tried it with Office 2010, however. A quick google search brings up many links that say it is possible, admittedly for other Linux versions than Mint, most times... like this one. Good luck:

I use Office 2010 under PlayOnLinux all the time. It is mostly 100% usable.. some oddities here and there, but works for me. The version I have that works for sure is Home and Student 32-bit.

Until the beginning of 2015 I had MS-Office 2010 installed in LMDE with Crossover (a modified Wine) and worked pretty well. But I don't use it anymore and I didn't install it again in my new LM17 system.
For me LibreOffice is more than enough (Writer is even better than MSWord, in my opinion).

I am a heavy duty OneNote user (especially like the "share" option since I have more than one computer).
Read this forum, installed CHERRYTREE - it's pretty slick but definitely NOT a replacement for OneNote.
I found a better solution.
I duplicated pages from OneNote into Excel (.xlxs-2010) which uses all the pics, formatting, etc.
Since Libre Calc reads Excel - viola! Problem solved. A few changes are necessary (ie an entire line was in bold, changed that for individual pieces). All the original formatting (fonts, sizes, colors, pics, links, etc.) are there.
Maybe this will work for you.

Have you bothered to look it up on the wine app database? It doesn't look good.
