[SOLVED] How to make a launcher for an "Open with ..." program

Post by astroannie » Fri May 20, 2016 11:18 pm

I have a program that runs under wine. I want to have a button on my launch bar for it.

What steps do I need to follow in order to make this happen?

It would be helpful if you could disclose which version of Linux Mint you are using as well as which desktop environment.

In Cinnamon, a right click on the desktop will open a list which among other things offers the option to "Create a new launcher here". You will have to enter a title and the path statement to the application. You can also click on the given icon and select another. That will create a launcher on the desktop.

By "launch bar" did you mean the panel? In that case you will have to install an applet called "Panel Launchers" (from System Settings, Applets).

If you want to add a menu entry to your main menu, right click on "Menu" (bottom left on panel), click on "Configure" and then "Open the menu editor" where you can add menu entries.

Thank you.

Yes, I am running Cinnamon. In 17.3.

I want to run a game called Sherlock (from Everett Kaser Software) from a button on the panel. I can right-click on it from the filesystem and tell it Open with Wine but I don't know how to make the leap to getting an icon anywhere that I can just click (or double-click, depending) and have it open with wine.

That is what I'm trying to accomplish.

Thank you for clarifying.

In Linux operating systems there are often several roads leading to the same goal.

I would firstly put an entry for Sherlock into the main menu: Right click on Menu, select Configure and then "Open the menu editor". Click on "Games" (left column), select "New Item" (far right column) which will launch a launcher editor.
Type Sherlock into the Name panel, click on Browse to find the location of the installed programme Sherlock and click on OK.

When you have done that, refresh Cinnamon (Ctrl+Alt+Esc) and the newly created entry will appear in your Games menu. Right click on Sherlock and select "Add to panel". You must have the "Panel Launcher Applet" installed before you do that.

You can edit the launcher icon as described in my post above.

I do not use Wine but prefer CrossOver and have several programmes listed in the main menu as well as the panel for instant access.

This almost works. When I browse to it, it lets me select it, but has the little no sign indicating it's an invalid choice.

I thought that might be because it opens with wine, but maybe there's something more nefarious afoot.

(You can change the icon by clicking on the icon on this screen -- this used to work in the gnome desktop, too).

Maybe you can type the complete path and program name here since the picture does not show it completely. Are you sure you have pointed to the correct file to start the program? Something I don't like in Linux compared to Windows where a program has the name like program.exe. You always know the exe file is the program which you should start.

Oops, sorry, I totally forgot you mentioned you are trying to start a program using Wine, in other words a Windows program with the .exe extension.
Seeing the path contains a space (Program Files) maybe you can try this:
"/media/j-mag/16307F62307F482F/Program Files/EKS/Sherlock/SHERLOCK.EXE"
Don't forget the remove the back-slash in Program\ Files.

Okay, what I'm confused about ... I browsed to this. And the \ is presumably there to escape the space.

FTS, I'll copy it somewhere -- I've got almost 2TB

So the problem was the space in the path name, not the fact that it ran with wine ....

Yes, the \ is to escape the next character but I always use the "-signs when a path or file name contains a space.
Glad to see it now works for you.
