It was my impression that the bug is not one that belongs to Mint or Cinnamon but rather Ubuntu. Would it make more sense to contribute to the existing bug report like the one referenced in my first post:

There may be others. Maybe reporters have to be running pure Ubuntu to participate. These reports give me the impression that we have to wait for the fix to trickle to us through updates.

I also have this issue, I can't in stall new fonts...

I'm the only user of this Linux Mint PC.

It looks like the patch is in testing stages and the update will hit us at some point in the near future.

FWIW you can follow the trail of why the bug happened but I don't think it matters much to anyone except historical questioners.
