No software sources

Post by ingeva »

After installing Mint MATE 18 I now can't get access to software sources. Nearly everything I try to install, fails. I have SMB but no NFS, no MySQL and so on. When I hover over the update icon, it says "Could not refresh the list of updates".
It worked yesterday, so is this just a temporary error?

I tried going back to 17.3, but now that fails too! (Can't install MySQL with the same old instructions).

I have re-installed now and I do get access to the repositories. There are some other issues, however, but I'll come back to them.

I guess there were access problems during the installation of the system itself, previously.
I have the impression that access to the newest repositories is unstable.

I also have had error messages, it seems that it happens when the repositories are in the midst of being updated. And since there are still some bugs being fixed in these new releases, there are a lot of updates being pushed to the mirrors/repositories.

Yes, I think you're right. What's frustrating is that I had to re-install 17.3 too because I did some partition changes (that required other changes) and that fails now too, even if I have restored the old install and configurations scripts.

The first thing I do before updating is to run "Software Sources" and then click on the Mirrors buttons for "Main" and "Base". It polls the various mirrors in your area and reports the speeds to each, sorting the fastest at the top. Choosing a faster mirror close to you may help prevent errors when the main repositories are busy.

In case of the version-upgrade you shall switch back to the main servers instead of a local mirror.

There are no software sources. If I start "Software sources" it asks for the password, and then NOTHING happens.
I haven't chosen any mirror, and don't even know how to do it.

Yes it is. I have started with a standard installation. gnupg is evidently installed as a part of that.

Sure, but it can't hurt to check. Sometimes, things go pear shaped.

I tried to install and got the message that it was already installed.

I hope so too. The strange thing is that the first time I installed Mint 18 I didn't have this problem. I just had to modify a few scripts to have MySQL and phpMyAdmin load properly. Now, since MySQL refuses to load, phpMyAdmin doesn't work either, and I'm unable to do maintenance and development of my web pages.
On top of it all, Mint 17.3 won't install properly any more. I had to re-install it because the partition was full.
FRUST!

I didn't find the problem, but I managed to restore the repository definition by regenerating the system (17.3 this time) and be very careful about the afterwork.
There's still a problem though, but that doesn't belong here.

It seems as though you do a lot of switching back and forth between 17.3 and 18. You might want to consider installing both systems to USB drives so that you don't have to keep going through the process of re-installing and re-configuring every time you switch. Or dual-boot, with 17.3 and 18 on separate partitions. You can keep all of your data files on a partition on your main drive and just mount that onto your filesystem with an entry in /etc/fstab after each reboot.

I have two linux partitions. Currently one for 17.3 and one for 18. They share the home directory. Unfortunately some install scripts (like for LAMP) must be different, but I'm working on the differences. The plan is, of course, to phase out 17.3 but I need to make 18 work first. There are some issues, for instance mysql needs a port number now because there's evidently no default any more, and I can't find it anywhere. This means I can't do local development or maintenance on websites that use MySQL.
Of course I have one USB stick for each system too. :)

That is in general a bad idea and makes it very likely, that the account breaks - with the consequence of several kind of problems.

You may be right, but so far it's been very successful, and I've done it like that for several years now.
Besides, running two different systems is only in a transition phase. Normally the two systems are the same revision.
It's always good to have a spare, and I have excellent backup in case something should go wrong. As a matter of fact I feel that I learn a lot by doing it this way.
