Hi there.

Running Mint 6 -x64. Runs lovely. Ive downloaded the appropriate tar.gz for songbird which is an app I like but to be truthful, Ive tried everything I know (which isnt much) to install it. Ive managed to unpack it to the desktop but thats as far as Ive got.

Can anyone help?

How? Is one good question, but Why? is an even better one.
Linux has shed loads of media players, most of them very good, so why is this one so important? (Incidentally you are not the only person to have asked about installing it btw, I remember replying to someone else about it not so long ago). Oh well if you must.

Here are some instructions for installing it on Ubuntu , they will almost certainly work for Mint as well.

But why you have to put your self through this purgatory for a media player is utterly mysterious to me.

I have found a PPA that contains the latest packages of Songbird (1.0.0) for Intrepid x86 and x86-64 (a.k.a. x64). After you add this PPA to your sources.list and refresh Synaptic, you will be able to install Songbird 1.0.0 through Synaptic.

First, open up your sources.list for editing. Enter this command in Terminal: Then add this line to the bottom of the file:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/fta/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main

Next, save the changes and close the file. Last thing you would have to do is fire up Synaptic, hit CTRL+R to refresh the package list then find and install Songbird.

One word of caution, though, I recommend that you comment out the repository after you have installed Songbird as it has experimental versions of some Mozilla softwares (e.g. Firefox 3.1 beta) that will otherwise get installed by mintUpdate. Do not forget to refresh your package information again after you comment out the repository.

Thanks for the reply . In answer to your question, songbird is great for downloading music too. Its also hoped that it will provide device support in the future. One of the things that I believe Linux everywhere lacks is device support for music players and mobile phones. A lot of young people make good use of this but at the moment can only do so in windows. Im the same so I have to have 2 external drives, one with ext3 and the other ntfs. The ntfs is where I store my music for my device. If songbird can connect to my device then it becomes the music player of choice for me. Lastly they made a version for windows. Im no fan of windows but if the windows community can see that decent software is developed by linux enthusiasts, it might just draw a few over to Linux. That can only be good.

So 'potential' connectivity and downloads are the reason for songbird. Looks nice too!

Thanks for that. It worked. I only wonder if i got the 64 bit version or the 32 bit. Dont suppose it matters!

Just for the sake of learning Im also going to follow the link viking gave and learn how to install a tar.bz or gz because... well because I wanna know! One of the joys of linux is learning this stuff:)
