wxHexEditor v0.23-beta (for Rosa, only)

Post by RonC »

I see searching for wxHexEditor on this forum gets no hits, so here is a post for the purpose of making it easier for anyone else running Rosa to find this .deb file, without (also) having to search the internet -- for several hours. :?

The most recent version is available here.

The usual precautions for going to a PPA apply. However, the maintainer has a good reputation and the immediately-previous version causes no problems or undesired interactions with the operating system. The change-log indicates the new version handles two files with a side-by-side comparison feature. Finally, the official repo (for Rosa/Trusty) doesn't seem to be picking up the current version.

Users of Mint 18 (Sarah) may go directly to the official repo, for a current wxHexEditor. However, that option isn't available to Mint KDE users, as Mint 18 stable is, as of yet, unavailable -- so right now the only choices would be either using the PPA -- or running the previous (0.22) version.

Thanks!
Frankly, the sole reason I selected wxHexEditor was because Patrick Verner uses it in his Parted Magic utility, and he seems to put a great deal of thought into what he elects to include. My copy is about two years old, however.

Have you a preference between the two programs? Does GHex handle side-by-side comparison?

And, which version is that? I believe 3.8.1 is the most recent version, available in the official repo for Trusty, while 3.18.2 is the current version -- for more recent systems.

Unless, of course, there's a PPA, somewhere ...

I don't use a hex-editor for poking in a file (except there would be a special case), but I need it sometimes to inspect a binary file. For this purpose GHex (yes: 3.8.1) does all what I want, it is very easy - but on the other hand also rather basic (no side-by-side comparison).

Without doubt, wxHex is more powerful.

When I saw it in Parted Magic, I suspected it would be a good choice.

Thanks for the feedback. That saves me a lot of time!
