I have had a usual Dell problem on my dimension 5000 with a very noisy cpu fan running at maximum all the time sounds like a jet engine taking off
It seems lots are like that from reading information on tinternet...
I have downloaded i8kutils but every time i turn on pc i have to go to the terminal and enter ..sudo modprobe i8k force=1
Then enter sudo /etc/init.d/i8kmon start..The fan then instantly drops to a quieter level
The question I need answering is how do I get it to permanently run the fan at a lower speed and not have to keep doing this every time I turn pc on
i8kutils
