Still no Thunderbird 45.6?

Post by trefoil80 » Wed Jan 18, 2017 1:42 am

Hi,

normally the people @ Linux Mint are really fast in publishing security updates (via the update manager), but I really wonder why there is still no upgrade to Thunderbird 45.6, fixing a severe security issue.
I mean, Mozilla released this version on December 28th, and now we already have January 18th...

I use LM 17.3 Cinnamon x64.

Anyone having additional info about this?

Thank you and best regards,
Trefoil80

the main thing to remember is that the LinuxMint project,
is based mostly on upstream products.

so, therefore any new release of TB is dependent on what the Ubuntu project does,
or even what the Debian project is doing.

LMDE has 45.6

Basically to piggy-back on what Pierre was saying, if you want up-to-date applications, you use the newest versions of Linux (Mint 18.1, Ubuntu 16, etc), or a rolling release distro like Arch. What you see on Mint 17.3 is inevitably what you're stuck with going forward (save some Mint-specific binaries and Nvidia drivers I think)

Wow, I cannot really see why neither Ubuntu nor Linux Mint takes care of this vulnerabilty!

I mean, these versions are LTS-versions with support until 2019, so fixing security-related issues should be adressed fastly until 2019.
It is not about always having the latest version, that's too easy and misses the sense of LTS-versions...

Debian still uses Icedove instead of Thunderbird, so LMDE will use Thunderbird from upstream not from Debian itself.

The more I think about this, the more I cannot understand why anybody updates Thunderbird in Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

Just helped myself via a PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa

Honestly, just can shake my head about this...

Please excuse me as I'm a newb, but, just so I understand the position correctly, you are saying that anyone using 17.3 will not get an update to 45.6 through Update Manager even though it addresses security problems, some of which are described as critical? So our only alternative is to manually install the update if we want it?

The current security update for Thunderbird only appears in the update manager after manually adding the PPA listed above via terminal.

It is really a shame that neither the people at Linux Mint nor Ubuntu takes care of it.
I mean, even if the people at Ubuntu are sleeping, the Mint team can add the update by themselves...
This really puts into question if Linux Mint is still the right distro to use, as such important security issues are NOT adressed in a timely manner.

Can they really? I don't think they control the repos.

Although most applications for Mint come from the Ubuntu repositories, they do have their own repository, also.

Code: Select all

 $ inxi -r | grep mint
deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/linuxmint-packages rosa main upstream import
           deb http://extra.linuxmint.com rosa main

Thanks. Following your procedure I've now got 45.6.

Debian Stretch just got Icedove 45.6.0 today so I am confident Thunderbird 45.6.0 on Ubuntu will follow soon and so will Mint.

Anyway, this is a real desaster...Mozilla released 45.6 almost a month ago...

Hi, Bolle1961.

This thread is not about Firefox, for which the current version 50.1.0 is available in the official Ubuntu repos, but about Thunderbird, for which version 45.6.0 has not made its way into the official Ubuntu repos, yet.
One of the ways of updating to Thunderbird 45.6.0 nonetheless is by using the ubuntu-mozilla-security PPA. Yet, one has to be aware that the stable releases which they offer have not got the final OK; else they would be available in the official Ubuntu repos.

Regards,
Karl

Time and Mozilla developers have made the question asked in the thread title "Still no Thunderbird 45.6?" a bit obsolete ...
It should read "Still no Thunderbird 45.7?" by now.

Again the answer is:
It has not arrived in the official Ubuntu repos, yet, for whichever reasons; but e.g. the Ubuntu Mozilla Security Team offer it in their PPA. Of course, Mozilla themselves offer it, too,

I just read this message yesterday and today there is an update to thunderbird (45.7) and firefox (51.0.1) :-)

I've kept the repository installs so I could learn more about linux mint (debian or ubuntu) update process, but some time ago I installed both thunderbird and firefox to /usr/local.

For example, I download firefox from:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/

Get the checksum from:
http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/

Then execute:

sha512sum -c firefox-51.0.1.tar.bz2.sha512
sudo tar --no-same-owner -C /usr/local/ -xf firefox-51.0.1.tar.bz2
