Get iphone 7 Plus Photos Into Cinnamon 18.1 [SOLVED]

I just installed Mint Cinnamon 18.1 on my wife's computer.

The computer is an Asus tower with a 1 TB SSHD drive, an Intel i7-4790K@4.00 GHz, 16.0 Gig RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Video Card.

The phone is an iphone 7 Plus with OS 10 on it.

When she connects the phone to the computer with a USB cable, the file manager recognizes the phone but cannot see any of the folders or files on it. How does she copy photos off the phone?

Is there an App for the phone or a software package for Mint needed for this?

Thanks for any help on this.

Easiest answer is Dropbox. But there are plenty of more complicated answers.

I can do this pretty easily with my Android phone. If I plug a USB cable from the computer into the phone, Mint will open up the File Manager. This used to be all that was required, but a recent Android update changed that. Now I have to show the Notifications on the phone, and there will be one notification that says the phone is charging, tap for additional options. One of the options given is to use the USB connection for file transfer. Select that one, and all the files are shown in the Mint file manager, and you can move files back and forth and so on. I have also installed the Asus file manager. If you scroll down, at the bottom of the file manager there is an option for PC file transfer. Tap that, and it pops up and says you can now access your phone at 192.168.1.xxx. Open the browser on the PC, enter the address given, and there are your files on the phone. I don't know if either of these are available on the iPhone, but I suppose it's worth looking into. It seems like the last time somebody asked about phone to PC file transfer I came up with 3 options, but I can only think of those 2 at the moment. Well, sometimes if I only have one or two files to transfer, I'll just email them to myself.

I suspect something like Dropbox is the best idea.

Apple has zero interest in supporting Linux or in fact any other systems than their own unless they have to. And they may have to support WIndows to some degree but not much else. So iPhone support is very spotty in Linux.

And since they're always changing protocols it's a moving target. So if you do find a solution involving a direct connection between your iPhone and your Mint box, it'll likely stop working pretty soon,

If you're dedicated to Apple devices going forward Linux may not your optimal choice for a primary install.

Thanks for the useful information. I checked Dropbox but it appears to be a cloud application. If that's the only solution, she may have to get along by emailing photos off the thing.

Thanks for this direction. Will see what's available on the iphone.

I'm aware that they don't like to support any systems other than their own. I have an iPhone 4 and it works great with Mint but I don't update the OS.

Dedicated? Hardly.

If Dropbox isn't your cup of tea there is another Dropbox type solution called Btsync. The free version will only sync content when you are on your home network, and the upside is that the app for iPhone can be set to automatically sync new photos every time she connects to your home wifi. There are tutorials all over the net on how to set this up. Btsync works really well I use it to keep my KeePass dB synced between my phone, tablet, and laptop. It also sync's a copy on my home brew raspberry pi NAS I run to backup all my files. Btsync isn't the only one out there though there are other programs that work the same like syncthing just to name another.

Hi "rgand",

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

"pCloud" is another great cloud storage provider you might consider with an excellent Linux client as well.

There are applications (packages) that are available in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) (repositories) for Mac, iMac, etc... that might work: MTP, gtkpod, ifuse, gnupod-tools, gpodder, usbmuxd, etc...

"libimobiledevice" (probably installed, right click it in the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" to install recommended and suggested packages)
A cross-platform software protocol library and tools to communicate with iOS® devices natively.
http://www.libimobiledevice.org/

Sometimes you can put certain phones and devices into USB mode or MTP mode, etc... which may help with communicating with proprietary systems like on Apple devices.

When Apple devices are in "DFU" mode?, recovery mode, and maybe safe mode, you should have direct USB access to what is on it.

How to Enter and Exit iPhone DFU Mode, Recovery Mode, and Safe Mode

There are also numerous posts in this forum on this topic, if you search for them.

Hope this helps ...

Hi "rgand",

I just saw this in another post where someone is using "Feem v4" to transfer stuff from their iPhone to computer and visa-versa. Install the application in your iPhone and your Linux Mint computer.

Feem
Hi. My Name is Feem. I happen to be the best local file transfer app on Earth. Feem works like Bluetooth; but 50X faster.
Use right arrow on their website to download their 64 bit only Linux application, uses Linux ".appimage", so you may need to install "fuse", if it is not already installed.

Dropbox looks like a pretty fair solution. I wouldn't want it syncing anytime except while my phone is connected to wifi though.

Hi "rgand",

I forgot to mention:

This might work: If your iPhone, or any phone or device, uses an unencrypted microSD card for storing the multimedia files (photos, music, video, etc...), and you have a USB microSD card adapter (low cost), you can temporarily remove the microSD card from that phone or device and put that into the USB microSD adapter, plug that into a USB port to copy files from or to the card using your file manager and therefore your iPhone or device. Some laptops and desktop computers already have slots for reading MicroSD cards.

To my knowledge the iPhone 6 and 7 don't have removable storage. I put dropbox on my iPhone earlier this afternoon and it's current uploading the photos in my phone to my DB account. I've got DB on my Mint 18 installation and I'm getting the image files... Its a bit slow, but then my internet connection isn't the fastest; the phone is using my WIFI connection. Seems to be working nicely and I don't have to fuss with other stuff. A rather simple, easy to use solution.

phd21 - This F'n WORKED!!

I followed the link you posted to and installed Feem on both my iphone 5c and laptop linux mint 18.1 .. I am stoked. Too bad the libimobile dealy-O did not work out for me. I hoped that I would be able to connect the dots via some mostly great instructions,, but watevs. Feem serves the same difference for me as I mostly just need to transfer the pics fro my iphone to my laptop in mostly ricky-tic fashion,,, about the same effort with Feem as I would pluging into computer with usb and doing the point and click "stuff",,,, anyways- Thanks again!

Hi all,

I had the same issue and looked into the imobiledevice (http://www.libimobiledevice.org/ ) solution that was mentioned.

Sadly after finding it in the software manager and installing it, I still could not access the files using the file browser. When I logged out of my session and logged back in with the root account, I noticed that the files were now visible.

My device was listed as /dev/usb/hiddev0 of which the owner (root) had RW permissions, the group (root) had no permissions. I created a group (idevices) and assigned it as the group on /dev/usb/hiddev0. Gave it RW permissions and finally added my user account (karl) to the (idevices) group.

From that point on, I was able to view the images when logged into LinuxMint using my account instead of root.

Hope this helps anyone with similar issues.

Glad to hear this is a solution. I went to install it and it isn't in the software manager, at least in Mint 18.3. Are you using Mint 19?

Hi rgand,

Linux Mint 19 users already have the most current versions of the "libimobile6" packages in the Synaptic Package Manager (SPM), just search for "ipod" or "iphone" and you will see them, restart after installing these.

It might be a good idea for both Linux Mint 19 and 18.x users to install the PPA because I did not see "libideviceactivation" in the mint repositories (Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM))

Linux Mint 19 - my recommendations for Apple products like iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc...
"libimobiledevice6" with recommended and suggested packages, ifuse, sqlcipher, libideviceactivation, libplist3, libplist-utils, usbmuxd, libusbmuxd4, gtkpod, gnupod-tools, libgpod, libmtp9, libmtp-runtime, gmtp, jmtpfs, curl, wget

Linux Mint 18.x users can install this PPA to get more current versions, and search the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" for the same packages as above or with similar names.

Quamotion : “Quamotion” team
https://launchpad.net/~quamotion/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
To install this using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one: Click "Select All" above command, right click the highlighted command, select Copy (or Ctrl+Insert), click in the console terminal window, and right click paste (or Shift+Insert) (or Ctrl+Shift+v), repeat for each command.
phd21 wrote:Update Note 11/07/2020: Systems using Ubuntu 20.04 like Linux Mint 20 and KDE Neon may not need to add the PPA as current versions of the libimobile may already be in the software repos, skip to the install command. Adding this PPA messed up my newer KDE Neon and its power settings (upower) because it already had matching versions of libimobile that conflicted with the PPA version, so I had to purge the ppa, reinstall kde-full, etc...

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:quamotion/ppa

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt install libimobiledevice6 libimobiledevice-utils libideviceactivation libideviceactivation-tools libusbmuxd-tools libplist3 libplist-utils libplist++3v5 libplist-doc libgdiplus ideviceinstaller ifuse hfsutils mtp-tools gmtp jmtpfs go-mtpfs

Thanks for the great help, phd21. I'm going to install Mint 19 on one computer then follow your instructions with that to see how it works. I tried Mint 19 Cinnamon on the test computer and it didn't work well. I'll try xfce or Mate on that one.

Once I have it working, I'll know what I'm doing and can then do the same with my main computer.

Hi rgand,

You are welcome...

You can use Linux Mint 18.x for these as well after installing the PPA, and updating, search for the same packages in the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" or with similar names and install those, and reboot before trying them. Ie: search for "libimobiledevice" and install whatever version is available for Linux Mint 18.x...
