How do you capture the video and audio?
Did you check if your capture device is supported in Linux? Drivers is often a issue with certain brands. See link belo.

You can use VLC player to grab the video and audio. It's very easy to do and a quick google search will find plenty of guides and howtos.
As for converting, winff is about as easy as you can get.
Both VLC and winff is in the official repo so you can easily find it in the synaptic package manager.
The only thing about winff is it doesn't have a menu entry so you have to launch it from terminal.

thank you odtech for your reply...just got back from church where the sound dept who had never used linux before had zero learning curve problem...they used the audacity program i downloaded from the mint repo and everything just worked with zero adjustments needed...i hope clem reads this to know just how overjoyed i am with linux mint 18.1 cinnamon serena...also many thanks to pjotr who i also thank since his easy linux site was the very first place i found back in oct. and used all his tips and tricks and they also worked flawlessly...they were so impressed with linux mint at the church today, they want me to convert their other windows computers and the one apple computer to linux...ive now converted 26 computers and intend to do many more as i can help people to overcome the fear of something different than windows or mac...again many thanks to one and all in the mint community...damien

Hi "DAMIEN1307"

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum !

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would certainly help to know what equipment (devices) you are using to record video and audio with.

Have you installed "ubuntu-restricted-extras" from the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)? If not, I recommend doing that.

I would also install the "Video For Linux" packages, search for "V4L". The "QT v4l2 Test Utility" (qv4l2) can determine what your video capture device is capable of capturing, like what size resolution and at what frame rate, live realistic real time video is 25-30+ frames per second (FPS), but 20 fps works fairly well too. For instance, my Logitech c270 webcam is rated at widescreen 720p, but it will only record live video at 800x448 at 25 fps, 1280x720 at 10fps (not good for realistic live video), 640x480 at 30fps, etc...

"Audacity" is a great audio application, but it does not record video.

Install "guvcview" webcam software.
Lets you record video and audio from whatever video sources are available...
- It will try to automatically determine the best setting for the video device.

To install this using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pj-assis/testing
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install guvcview

Hope this helps ...

Simple Screen Recorder is another good application

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:maarten-baert/simplescreenrecorder
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install simplescreenrecorder simplescreenrecorder-lib
