Is there a CPU temp App/Applet/Desklet that won't freeze the System?

Post by CuXe »

Hi there,

I am working on a laptop that tends to get a bit hot. I have cleaned internal components for dust and made sure internal fans are working properly. I also have a cooling pad.

Despite these efforts, I have suffered data loss when the computer runs too hot and shuts down by itself.

I installed Psensor, but it would freeze the system every 15 seconds or so for 1 second at a time. Needless to say, I had to remove it.

I have been searching for similar monitoring solutions but the applets/desklets I've found all have similar warnings (may freeze the system in certain hardware configs)

Can anyone recommend a monitor that won't freeze my system? Something with a GUI would be awesome but if not, a terminal solution is OK..

BTW, I am running LM Cinnamon 18.1
Linux acer 4.4.0-53-generic #74-Ubuntu SMP Fri Dec 2 15:59:10 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Is lm-sensors installed and configured? Once installed run sudo sensors-detect and enter yes for all yes/no questions, see this link. There should be an applet available that will work correctly once lm-sensors is installed. (I'm not at my Linux box right now)

Yeah, it seems Lm-sensors is installed and working correctly. Running "sensors" in the terminal returns this:

Code: Select all

radeon-pci-0008
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +47.0°C (crit = +120.0°C, hyst = +90.0°C)

k10temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +47.1°C (high = +70.0°C)
                       (crit = +115.5°C, hyst = +108.0°C)
I could run this thing on the terminal if needed be, just wondering if there is something that makes use of Lm-sensors to display data via GUI (without freezing my system in the process of course)

OK, I'm on my Linux box and its Psensor that I had installed and it runs without a hitch on my box. Note sure why its giving you issues. If you right click on the panel and 'Add Applets to the panel' > 'Available applets (online)' > 'Refresh list' then search for 'temp' you should get a cpu and gpu applet show up. You could install the cpu (or both) and see if that works any better.

I like the simplicity of only:
  • sudo sensors
It provides the basic, uncomplicated, straightforward information an average user can understand and work with.

For example:
user@quad-core ~ $ sudo sensors
atk0110-acpi-0
Adapter: ACPI interface
Vcore Voltage: +1.07 V (min = +0.80 V, max = +1.60 V)
+3.3 Voltage: +3.33 V (min = +2.97 V, max = +3.63 V)
+5 Voltage: +4.92 V (min = +4.50 V, max = +5.50 V)
+12 Voltage: +12.04 V (min = +10.20 V, max = +13.80 V)
CPU FAN Speed: 803 RPM (min = 600 RPM, max = 7200 RPM)
CHASSIS1 FAN Speed: 0 RPM (min = 600 RPM, max = 7200 RPM)
POWER FAN Speed: 0 RPM (min = 600 RPM, max = 7200 RPM)
CPU Temperature: +27.0°C (high = +60.0°C, crit = +95.0°C)
MB Temperature: +32.0°C (high = +45.0°C, crit = +95.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +42.0°C (high = +74.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +38.0°C (high = +74.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 2: +44.0°C (high = +74.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 3: +44.0°C (high = +74.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

sensors without sudo is all that's really needed. You can also use inxi -s

Thank you guys, I'll continue to use sensors via terminal :)
