Virtualbox and a resultant broken packages... (SOLVED)

Postby tenfoot » Sun Mar 26, 2017 3:49 am

Using LM18.1 MATE

Downladed virtualbox-5.1_5.1.18-114002-Ubuntu-xenial_amd65.deb to install. All dependencies were satisfied but during the installation process my computer the application window "froze" and I had to do a ForceQuit.

Tried again and and after entering my password, got an error message that I could not run two sudo sessions and must close one.

Checked Processes running and found nothing. Did a reboot and tried the installation again and got the same error.

Decided to go into Synaptic to see if I could find a solution there and received the following
1-Screenshot at 2017-03-26 20-08-22.png
)

Tried to install using the terminal and pointing to the archive, with the following result.
2-Screenshot at 2017-03-26 20-16-56.png

Tried an installation through gDebi again with the following result
3-Screenshot at 2017-03-26 20-20-39.png

I then searched the internet for how to fix broken packages and ended up at this site: https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/482 Did a copy and paste for the first command listed, with the following result.

As this appears to be a "circular" argument, I left it there and seek the advice of the Forum members, please.

If you mean, that you pressed and did hold the power button for a couple of seconds you have possibly damaged the file system.

Open a terminal and run

Code: Select all

sudo touch /forcefsck

Then reboot the computer and hope, that the errors will get corrected.

Hi Cosmo

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I should have been more explicit. On the Panel I have the ForceQuit applet and I used that to quit.

Open a terminal and run

Code: Select all

sudo touch /forcefsck

Then reboot the computer and hope, that the errors will get corrected.

Haven't done that yet and await your further thoughts.

Just in case this helps after fixing the broken package stuff: Here is a recipe for installing the current VirtualBox. Particular attention to dkms being obsolete for VB 5.1.

So we can forget this part.

There is another quote by you, which looks strange:
tenfoot wrote:Tried again and and after entering my password, got an error message that I could not run two sudo sessions and must close one.

I doubt that. I would merely believe, that the message spoke about 2 processes of Synaptic. Re-check this.

In the last screenshot of the starting post there 2 commands given at the end. Did you run both?

Is there an older version of VirtualBox installed?

Yes, perhaps that error message relies too on my memory, as I didn't make a note at the time. Thinking harder, it may have said something like "There is another instance (of?) running. check that you do not have Synaptic or Update Manager running"

In the last screenshot of the starting post there 2 commands given at the end. Did you run both?

Yes, I did but forgot to attach the screenshot. Here it is
Screenshot at 2017-03-28 09-34-35.png

The file /etc/apt/sources.list shows only #deb cdrom:[Linux Mint 18 _Sarah_ - Release amd64 20160628]/ xenial contrib main non-free which,

I opened Software Sources (as superuser) gui and found:

Under the tab Official repositories I have:

Main (serena) http://packages.linuxmint.com
Base (xeial) http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu

Under Additional repositories

CD-ROM (Installation Disc)
deb cdrom:[Linux Mint 18 _Sarah_ - Release amd64 20160628]/ xenial contrib main non-free

Note: There is no check tick in the square alongside this item.

Is there an older version of VirtualBox installed?

Yes, v5.1_5.1.14

No. When I try to open a virtual machine (for example Windows 7) I get the following

and
02.png

Entering the command suggested results in
03-.png
and trying to install virtualbox-5.1_5.1 again results in the screenshot following.

I can find no way to add more than three attachments!

Here is the last one, referred to in the previous message.

Remove VB 5.1.14 completely.
Reboot!
Open synaptic and search for broken packages, fix it.
Reboot!
Install VB 5.1.18
Try again.

you could also try:
open Package Manager AKA Synaptic:
- - Edit - Fix Broken Packages - apply - then click on Reload
- find virtual box - - select to completely remove - apply

then exit Package Manager.

finally, try clicking on that VB51.deb file again & see if it now installs ok.

Please see first screenshot of my original post. That is the error message I get when I try to openSynaptic :(

What you could do is what's listed on the VBox download page, under Debian-based Linux distributions: add a line to /etc/apt/sources.list - or much better - create a .list file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ and download and install the public key. After that, synaptic and apt/aptitude should be able to find the archive to download the package from.

Try this, in a terminal, all on one line:

Code: Select all

echo "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian xenial contrib" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/virtualbox.list

Then this:

Code: Select all

wget -qO- https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc | sudo apt-key add -

And then these two commands:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-5.1

Because of the state your system is in, there may be errors. Tell us all about them and we'll help you fix them.

Trying to remove VB 5.1.14 results in
vb-5.1-5.14.png

Did a reboot, anyway, in the vain hope that it would make a difference (Hope springs eternal in the savage breast) but it didn't, of course.

However, see next message.

Thank you grizzly You "nailed it" and I am a very happy geriatric :D
