It's a little bit annoying seeing the libreoffice document recovery thing pop up every time I try to use it

Post by James_Smith »

I don't know why this is happening, but it is literally each and every time I use it. My old computer (with LM 17 XFCE) never had this problem.

And it's not really a problem; it's more of an annoyance. It's two unnecessary extra steps each and every time I have to use LibreOffice.

Here's my computer's hardware/software info:

Let's start with the blindingly obvious: do you always save your documents before closing LibreOffice or shutting down your computer? Do you always shut down Libre Office before shutting down your computer? I only get this behaviour if I shut down the computer (willingly or unwillingly) while unsaved documents are open in LO.

If LO offers to recover anything, than there must be something to recover. If you use the quickstarter try to disable it and check, if the problem remains.

Hi, folks.

Just to support James_Smith's complaint about Libre Office which comes with Linux Mint 18.1:
On my Linux Mint 18.1 32-bit xfce, Libre Office Calc has got a habit of crashing frequently whenever I insert a new row into an existing table. An issue which I have never come across in older Libre Offices on Mint 17.x.
After it has crashed Libre Office will offer me to recover the file which I had been been working on before the crash. So far recovery has always succeeded. But why the heck does it crash at all?
(I guess, the next thing I will do is cross-checking whether Ubuntu 16.04.2 and Linux Mint 18.1 bring along different Libre Office versions, because until now I have not noticed the same problem on Ubuntu 16.04.2.
Oh yes, and I will check whether the Libre Office Quickstarter is in use by default.)

Regards,
Karl

Perhaps related with this bug? Unluckily the bug fix version (LO 5.1.7) is not available in the Ubuntu repos (as so often  ).

Sometimes it helps, to create a new LO profile, by deleting (or renaming) the folder libreoffice in your home's .config folder.

Saying that: here with a LO build taken from LO itself I have no crash with the heavily used Calc. So far about the "stability" argument with the official repositories.

The quick starter is not in use by default. Not with the LO builds and not with those from the official repos (all Mint version).

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I do save them. A long-time computer user, I'm in the habit of pushing Ctrl+S many times during the course of creating or modifying a document.

If you email me a LibreOffice document or spreadsheet right now and I download it and open it up, it will go straight into recovery mode. It does it 100% of the time with every single document, spreadsheet, or whatever that I try to use.

As said:

First turn of the quick starter, if it is activated.

Second: Create a new LO profile. LO (inclusive the quick starter) must be completely closed at first. More in detail: Open your file manager and make hidden files visible (ctrl-h). Now open in your home the folder .config and rename the subfolder libreoffice to libreoffice.bck. Test again.
