One of my favorite features in the Cinnamon desktop (3.2.4) is the presence of the update manager icon in the panel so I can easily know if updates are waiting. A few days ago it just disappeared. I do not believe it was in response to any updates as I had not made any in the time shortly before this occurred.
In an effort to get it back I tried several items including
-exploring all options in “Panel” under "System Settings”
-starting Update Manager manually from the menu
-rebooting
-removing Update Manager from start applications, rebooting, adding it back to startup applications, rebooting again
-doing searches in the forum and Google
-updating my version to 3.2.7 via Synaptic (hoping this might corrected any corrupted config.)
Has anyone else encountered this? If so did you find a solution? Thanks for taking a look at this.
My environment is…
$ cat /etc/linuxmint/info
RELEASE=18.1
CODENAME=serena
EDITION="Cinnamon 64-bit"
DESCRIPTION="Linux Mint 18.1 Serena"
DESKTOP=Gnome
TOOLKIT=GTK
$ cinnamon --version
Cinnamon 3.2.7

Re: Update Manager disappears from panel
There is a checkbox in the Update Manager's menu > Edit > Preferences - Options tab. Please check to make sure it is NOT checked.
- [ ] only show a tray icon when updates are available or in case of errors
Re: Update Manager disappears from panel
Thanks for that heads up. The "[ ] only show a tray icon..." is indeed unchecked.
Re: Update Manager disappears from panel
Panel applet icons are sometimes flaky.
Right click panel->troubleshoot->restore all settings to default
has always fixed it for me.

Re: Update Manager disappears from panel
MintBean - Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately it did not work for this issue.
Correction: This suggestion DID work. I had tried checking the option in Update Manager settings to only show the panel icon when updates were available to see if that would put the icon back. Once I realized I needed to go back in and uncheck that option the icon immediately reappeared after the reset to default.
Thanks to each of you who took time to help with this problem.

Re: SOLVED: Update Manager disappears from panel
I am rather sure, that the origin of the problem was, that you unwillingly removed the sys tray applet from the panel. If this happens again, check this.

Thanks for the suggestion...
Re: SOLVED: Update Manager disappears from panel
To solve this problem, here is what I did:
Open Startup Applications window
Edit mintUpdate
In the Command field, replace 'mintupdate-launcher' by 'mintupdate'

Re: SOLVED: Update Manager disappears from panel
Many thanks for the solution. This had been driving me mad, and I had been too scared to use 'Restore ALL settings to default' as I feared it might change things other than the panel!
It's great to have everything back to normal.
