There was in the 18.2 beta the problem, that 2 onscreen keyboards (caribou and onboard) got launched simultaneously, when the onscreen keyboard got enabled. To solve this there has been a fix applied, which effectively prevents onboard from starting (except in the LightDM login screen).

I don't think, that anybody except the developers can do something about it.

i had the same problem, and reverted back from backup to previous release..
Is these a way to solve the problem maybe with an unstable package?
i read articles suggested and i did not understood if the patch in cinnamon created the problem or solved it
Thanks

Linux Mint 18.2 is a total waste of time!! Why would they install onboard by default if they knew it wouldn't work!!!! :( :(

The problem is in cinnamon...
Anyway I found a workaround for my situation:
I used to have a button on my panel that invoked dbus-send command to show or hide onboard running in daemon mode.
Now with this new version of cinnamon this is not working anymore like before, but running onboard as super user works..( like at login screen)
So I run sudo onboard automatically at cinnamon startup and I run the dbus-send command with sudo before it...and I edited sudoers file to allow my user to run the onboard executable and the dbus-send command as root user without password..
It is maybe not the best solution safety wise, but it is acceptable for me in a desktop laptop for the use I have...and now it is working again like before and getting even the custom settings I had before in my user...

even the RIP-Windows XP has a virtual keyboard but not Cinnamon!! Why don't they fork their own onscreen keyboard or stop messing around with things that we don't need all together. I don't care about these point releases and updates if they don't bring in new functionalities. We don't care if you fork Bill Gates himself. We need sth that works period.

I created a desktop launcher with the command "gksudo onboard". Works for me.
