Linux Mint 12 Lisa XFCE software sources update

Post by anonymousparis »

Hi,

I have noticed, I cannot update this old, but still cool version of Mintie. I edited the sources list with repositories using:

Code: Select all

sudo abiword /etc/apt/sources.list
and the standard guide from here:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=79533

I have chosen the sources list like this:

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/debian main upstream import
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/squeeze main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/squeeze/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org squeeze main non-free
# deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main contrib non-free
# deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org squeeze-backports main
what I get in the console is:

Code: Select all

Ign http://www.deb-multimedia.org squeeze InRelease
Ign http://www.deb-multimedia.org squeeze Release.gpg

min 12 has nothing to do with the repositories you've entered, and has been out of support for years, download and reinstall a supported version like Mint 18.2 XFCE

I know 12 is not supported, but that doesn't mean I cannot update repositories, because before, like 8 months ago I updated, but I dont know the xact list of sources to do it.

Upgrading up to 18 is impossible, since my computer now is HP Pavilion dv8000 with AMD Turion64 and after testing it, if I recall it was Serena or something, it was very slow on it.

Anyone has a list, please?

Update:

As for now I tried the Ubuntu sources list but it is not perfect, right? At least it updated and I can install Terminator. Why Ubuntu repos ar working and Mint doesn't have similar ones?

Code: Select all

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates main restricted universe
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-security main restricted universe
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu precise partner
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org precise free non-free

Ok, but as you see, it updated, then why the creators don't put some standard working sources that work, instead of leaving people behind. It is not logical to create completely new system and throw to the basket the old one, just because it has still the same version number.

As I see, the list I presented before from Ubuntu - like You had said it is based on - work like a charm.

Does there exist another source list, better than mine that I have found here?

do not insert repository at random, try putting ubuntu repos EOL (end of life) for oneiric, but still does not update anything, you can only use the package manager to install and remove software and you do not have security updates

if you insert supported release repositories, you must use update and dist-upgrade to advance, but it does not make sense, almost certainly will not work anymore.

what you see in that video does not have to go with what you want to do, mint 13 maya was already on a precise basis and does not seem he has changed repository

Love people who think thousands upon thousands of man hours should be expended without payment to support their prehistoric system.
Nothing wrong with running an old computer, but choose a suitable lightweight distro like Puppy Linux instead of expecting everyone to revolve around you.

Is it really so hard to put couple of lines for the future generations of Linux Mint users so they could update much easier?

By the way, I forgot to mention, I disabled Medibuntu since it went away, far away and added 2 lines, one for games and one for applications, lay be needed if someone would like to update old inexistent archived repositories with the existing Ubuntu based ones:

Code: Select all

#deb http://packages.medibuntu.org precise free non-free
deb http://archive.removed/ubuntu precise-removed apps
deb http://archive.removed/ubuntu precise-removed games

Re: Linux Mint 12 Lisa XFCE software sources update

in my view you only do useless and damaging things, the only thing you could do is set oneiric repo EOL

Code: Select all

gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
remove all and insert

Code: Select all

deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main universe restricted multiverse
deb-src http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main universe restricted multiverse

deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-security main universe restricted multiverse
deb-src http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-security main universe restricted multiverse

deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-updates main universe restricted multiverse
deb-src http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-updates main universe restricted multiverse
but not useful, look for a lightweight system for your pc and install it.

it is useless to continue this discussion

It's all open source and volunteer based. Why don't you release a fork of the old Mint versions (1-16) with updated repository links? Of course, if you want anyone to take it seriously, you'll have to keep it all updated with security patches because it's got more holes than a sieve at the moment. This will probably involve backporting massive amounts of software from newer releases to work with your outdated OS to ensure you get all the latest security patches... and then it's all got to be tested... plus of course there are the patches to the OS itself... you know, the ones included in the latest releases.

We might be able to recommend a supported Linux version for your machine, provided we have a full hardware overview. Please generate an overview of your system like this:

- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);

- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;

- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

- Press Enter.

- Copy/paste the output in your next message. Preferably put it between code tags,

Code: Select all

like this
And by the way: don't use "sudo" for launching graphical applications with root authority, but use "gksudo" instead.

OK, that weak old hardware is a challenge....

1. Try Linux Mint 18.2 Xfce, 32-bit:
http://mirrors.kernel.org/linuxmint/sta ... -32bit.iso

After installation, apply all speed tweaks described here:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/3

2. Reasons for using gksudo:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... ect/sudo-1

Because using sudo will result in permission problems: anything that's written by that program after you start it up as root (= by using sudo) will be owned by root and not by you as the user.

Is it so hard for you to understand that what you\'re doing makes zero sense and you're just going to break your system?

That 'tutorial' you linked to isn't even for the 'regular' Ubuntu based Mint, it's for LMDE.

Please LISTEN to people posting above who actually know what they're talking about while they still have the patience to read your posts and just install a currently supported Mint version.

I understand, that it is difficult, but please, some 6 months ago I updated using some lines from the internet and I was able to launch 12 XFCE, now I just cannot find the proper source of those lines, but I know that exist.

Maybe I will wait for someone to post them in here, I cannot even install Terminator or Skype.

So, without trying to assume someone might have the list of sources, I researched a sip and i have found a way to upgrade old Linux Mint 12 XFCE distro based on the Debian distro, since all are so or so based from top deep down from Debian originally. Now I can install Skype, Leafpad and all other nice software like Blender. In case anyone have doubts it exists or have similar "stuck with update" problem, here is the list below, which worked like charm for me:

Here is generic information for upgrade a debian based distro:

gksudo abiword /etc/apt/sources.list

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ maya main upstream import
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ precise partner
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ precise free non-free

#deb http://archive.removed/ubuntu precise-removed apps
#deb http://archive.removed/ubuntu precise-removed games
gksudo apt-get update

You should do independent research on how to update your sources file(s).

Finally I have my favourite Mintie Pingu I dreamed since 3 weeks.

Thanks.

for now precise repositories are still active, but those will also be closed (now it's end of life, no longer supported)

and you'll still have trouble, as well as mixing upgrades of different versions can cause problems and break the system anyway.

anyway, if you're happy .....

That's not a dream, that's a bloody nightmare.

As minitux already indicated, you've just created a Frankenstein trainwreck with the software sources of an Ubuntu version (12.04 Precise Pangolin) that's not even supported anymore....

In other words: you've gone from one dead version to another dead version. That's not even a zombie system, that's a double dead one.

And by the way: "gksudo apt-get update" is nonsense. gksudo is only for graphical applications, not for terminal applications like apt-get. For those there is sudo.
