Re: Firefox 57...Quantum
Download the firefox-57.0.tar.bz2 archive from the Mozilla website, unpack it to the new user's home directory (not system directories) and start it from that directory by running the executable directly without using the menu launcher? Yeah, that should let you try it out on the new user's account only. As soon as you install the upgrade through Update Manager or otherwise install it to your system directories or make changes to your system directories for it, that will affect the other user's account as well.Spearmint2 wrote:If we create a new user in Mint and log onto it, will FF57 install for just that the new user, for checking/testing it out, so the old FF can still be used in our normal user account?
You could also check if you have the Firefox 56 .deb file still in /var/cache/apt/archives. If so, copy it to your home directory. Then you can apply the Firefox 57 upgrade through Update Manager and switch to the new user account and use Firefox 57 there. If you have trouble with it, you can downgrade to Firefox 56 by installing the .deb file of that version from your home directory. As long as you don't start Firefox on your own account while you have Firefox 57 installed, it doesn't affect your own account.
Another alternative is you could first try it from the Linux Mint installation DVD/USB. Just boot from that, or load it in VirtualBox, and open Update Manager from the menu, click Refresh, and then apply only the Firefox upgrade (or do
apt update
and then apt install firefox
on the terminal for same effect). That way no changes are made to your system but you can test drive Firefox 57.I'm very happy after today. I spent a little time just discovering the changes on a fresh profile (I went with the "rename .mozilla to something else" approach of testing, with option to downgrade Firefox if needed) then changed things to my liking from its defaults and added back my bookmarks and extensions. While looking around I even stumbled across some new extensions to install. As I close Firefox down for the day, I'm perfectly settled with it

also available in .deb package as of today at Ubuntu.
http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/f/firefox/
32 and 64 bit versions available.
Also, thanks xenopeek for the quick tutorial on user only FF install. I'd done it once by mistake a couple years back and thought I'd remember, but failed to do so.

Odd, I'm on the default repos and still no update. How can that even happen?xenopeek wrote:Firefox 57.0 is in the Linux Mint repositories currently. Re: Firefox 57...Quantum
I unzipped the tar.bz2 and just dropped the firefox folder and it's subfolders into my user's folder, changed the folder name to .firefox57 to remind me I still had old firefox in .mozilla folder. I ran the firefox program in the .firefox57 folder and it runs great. System is 18.1 and I added a desktop launcher and one on the panel below, but have a problem doing same in Mint's Menu.
For some reason the Menu in this version 18.1 (USB LIVE with persistence) won't allow any changes in it. I can't even view Properties on anything in it. I also right clicked and did the "Edit Menu" and same there too. I opened terminal and ran "sudo mozo" in hopes that would force it, but no changes that were made in it, worked to actually change the Menu. This problem may have already existed and I just noticed it.

Re: Firefox 57...Quantum
why are they starting with the old repositories first? Seems they'd start with the newest and work down from there.

Betsy is the Linux Mint Debian Edition. Makes sense since LMDE often gets new stuff first.
Must be what xenopeek's running.

Re: Firefox 57...Quantum
My mistake. I just searched for "firefox" on http://packages.linuxmint.com/ and saw a long list of 57.0. It was late I failed to notice these were all localization packages for Betsy, and not as I thought the Firefox packages for all editions... Doh. So yeah, Firefox 57.0 is not yet available on Linux Mint 17.x or 18.x.

We have lift off
One of my niggles is the titlebar in cinnamon, the extension I used to hide it has been disabled. But I have found a way to hide it again if anyone is interested, follow the guide here and it should make the bar disappear, worked first time for me.

When it is installed though it makes the close & minimize/maximize buttons disappear which was rather annoying, so I have installed these, and it puts the close window button in the toolbar below.

Re: Firefox 57...Quantum
I have updated to Firefox 57. In about:support page, it shows
I thought WebRender is that magic thing that will improve rendering speed? It's not included in the Linux Mint builds? Any Ideas?
Code: Select all
WEBRENDER
opt-in by default: WebRender is an opt-in feature
unavailable by runtime: Build doesn't include WebRender

Re: Firefox 57...Quantum
Download and installed the Firefox 57. First thing I noticed is there is no way to shut up the automatic video players such as on CNN. Flashstopper no longer works!!!! Have now reverted back to version 56.0 and shut off the Firefox updates.
Re: Firefox 57...Quantum
Hummm....
I think I will just wait a few days before I upgrade. Just got off wire with a friend in England and he said its "*hit". lol.. But he is running that other operating system right now. Told him to uninstall FF and then reload it.
Im starting to hear a lot of bad about it. Hope not. Mozilla doesnt need this to happen. Any good thoughts ?

Re: Firefox 57...Quantum
It killed my Classic Theme Restorer extension. Now my tabs are all on top again dang it! Tried to change using some mozilla forum suggested css styles into userChrome.css placed into my chrome folder, but every one just made it hang. Guess I'll have to wait for updated add-on similar to those I used to appear. I also want to get rid of that translucent toolbar and make it transparent again.Linux-Bill wrote:Download and installed the Firefox 57. UPDATE;
I got my tabs back to the bottom under URL bar, and now have the translucent bookmarks bar turned transparent. Used the CSS files for FF57-Quantum from here.
https://github.com/Aris-t2/CustomCSSforFx/releases
It's the same person who has the Classic Theme Restorer add-on for earlier versions of Firefox. Remember to drop him some paypal if it works for you too. Since it's CSS, not as easy as the older CTR was, you have to comment out anything you don't want and remove comment in files for what you do want. I had no problem using MATE's Text Editor (pluma) for doing that. What you do is unzip the files into a chrome folder you create in your firefox user's profile folder. I'm happy enough now with 57.

Re: Firefox 57...Quantum
Quantum has landed. Lost many of my old favorite add-ons. FF is now like Opera.
I loved that in FF, and only FF, I could click on a link and it would open in a new tab. No more. Tab Mix Plus is gone. Now I have to be careful not to open carelessly, lest I lose my place.
No backup with FEBE, CLEO and OPIE,
All sorts of little functionalities lost.
Writing this from Opera.

Huh. I've got both my SeaMonkey and my Pale Moon set up to do that. It's just another setting.cecilieaux wrote:I loved that in FF, and only FF, I could click on a link and it would open in a new tab.
Chromium and Iridium will do it if I use my middle mouse button to click... and so does FF57.

this FF57 update won't bother me. as I've got so few add-ons running these days, anyway.
