rsync errors - backup to NAS

Post by AndyMH » Sun Oct 01, 2017 12:23 pm

I've got rsync running under a script backing up to either a 256G SD in the express card slot on my laptop or to my synology NAS. It all works, but...

When backing up to the NAS, rsync reports a few errors (context - in backing up some 355k files in root, excluding non-hidden files in /home, about 30 errors). All are of the form:

Code: Select all

rsync: rsync_xal_set: lsetxattr(""/media/andy/diskstation/root/home/andy/.icons/.System-Usb-icon.png.HABz6R"","user.xdg.origin.url") failed: Operation not supported (95)
Don't get these problems when backing up to the SD card. Any ideas, searching on the web didn't generate anything useful??

Is it a symbolic link?
Run:
ls -la /media/andy/diskstation/root/home/andy/.icons/.System-Usb-icon.png.HABz6R

Also, what is the exact rsync command?

If you're mounting the target with NFS or Samba/CIFS that may be a limitation, in which case you could try working around the problem by using Rsync with an SSH connection to the NAS.

It looks like the mount for your diskstation is not setting extended attributes, which could either be because the mount command didn't enable them or because the DSM software on the Synology doesn't support them on the published volume. Looking at the DSM 6.1 manual they have provision for Windows ACL, but its not clear to me if you can do Linux xattrs w/o resorting to ssh'ing in to the NAS as an administrator. Maybe a search of the Synology forums will help.

Thanks for the responses, I'll post further when I have a bit more time (work getting in the way).

The NAS is mounted as NFS and I suspect that DSM 6.1.3 doesn't support extended attributes, but need to do more checking. SSH may be the way forward.
The rsync command (source varies depending on what is being backed up - this is for root):

Code: Select all

rsync -aAXhz --stats --delete --no-inc-recursive --info=progress2 --log-file=$logfile --exclude-from=$SystemExcludes "$source2" "$destination
