VLC media player

I am using linux mint 18.2. For some reason there is no - or + icon, on my vlc media player, ergo I cannot minimize it. What options do I have please?

You first option would be to read "how to get help" in the link immediately above your post.

So, you're not seeing any -, +, or x at the top?

Actually, you should still be able to minimize it by right clicking the VLC window button on the panel, but you shouldn't have to.

As mentioned, are you not getting the maximize or minimize buttons in your window title bar? And if so is this just for VLC or all windows?

You can also left click on the small down-arrow-head (or maybe the vlc icon) far left of the title-bar, or right click anywhere in the title-bar.

Do you actually see a title-bar or are you missing window decorations on windows?

I don't know Mint very well any more nor do I know if you are using compiz ,but if it has compiz in use as window manager you may also need to install compizconfig-settings-manager to make sure the Window-decoration plugin is enabled.

Alternatively you may find that restarting whatever window manager is in use will bring back window decorations including the Minimise/maximise/close icons.

You could purge/remove vlc, then reinstall it.

try going to vlc toolbar View tab.
see if Fullscreen view is selected.
If it is selected then uncheck the box
