Cinelerra-cv freezes on launch (desktop PC only)

Postby leo67 » Fri Nov 10, 2017 6:48 am

I have a laptop (intel i7 6700K/Nvidia 1060/16 GB RAM) and a desktop (AMD 990FX/AMD 8300FX/Nvidia 1060/16 GB RAM/4 LCD displays) both in triple boot (W10/manjaro/mint) on separate SSD disks and working like a charm. All identical OS on both computers have similar proprietary Nvidia drivers and installed apps.

Each time I tried to launch Cinelerra-CV on either Mint or Manjaro, it freezes when loading the GUI on the desktop (i.e. only the mouse responds in terms of moving accross the screen then, after a few minutes, funny symbols start to fill the screen and I have to do a hard reboot) while it launches normally on the laptop. Cinerella-CV package came from the cinelerra-CV PPA. I have Linux mint 18.1 KDE 64 bit but I use cinnamon 3.2.7 and kernel 4.8.0-58-generic. Plenty of applications installed, including video-editors which I have not fully tried, but nothing has ever crashed so far.

I tried the command line "cinelerra" instead so to get some error messages on mint but all I got was:

Code: Select all

On the other hand this is what the "cinelerra" command line gave me on manjaro:

Code: Select all

As said before the system froze quickly at cinelerra GUI launching stage so I had to take a picture of the screen and did a bit of OCR to get the above output. A few minutes later the screens started to be filed with gibberish characters.
Any idea in terms of debugging/troubleshooting?

I tried the cinelerra-GG version (https://cinelerra-cv.org/download.php)instead of cinelerra-CV and no more issues as far as I can tell. Icing on the cake there are more features and codecs maybe at the expense of stability. We'll see
