Flash player crashes on right click in firefox 56

Postby bobsuperjohnbobson » Fri Nov 10, 2017 12:09 pm

Flash objects crash when right clicked!
It doesn't crash the browser, just the flash object I clicked on.
Particularily, this site http://patchwork-synth.com/ crashes with a couple of things;
- Right click
- Opening a patch/subpatch
- Saving a patch/subpatch

I would like a valid fix that doesn't abandon firefox for chrome.

Running Linux Mint Cinnamon
Flash version 26.0 r0
Firefox version 56.0

Hi, bobsuperjohnbobson.

You might try updating your outdated Flash plugin 26 through Update Manager. It should offer you Flash plugin 27.0.0.183 at the time of writing this.

This did not fix the issue, but it shows a slightly different window now:
error.png

It only showed "The adobe flash plugin has crashed" before the update.

Hi, bobsuperjohnbobson.

By now update-manager should offer you 2 browser related updates - unless you have already installed them:
+ Flash plugin update from 27.0.0.183 to 27.0.0.187
+ Firefox update from 56.0 to 57.0

In case the problem persists on Firefox 57.0 with Flash plugin 27.0.0.187, then more likely than not, the root cause will be something inside your Firefox user profile.
In case the problem persists on Firefox 57.0 with Flash plugin 27.0.0.187, these are the steps to check out whether this is the case:
  • Close Firefox in case it is currently started.
  • Open a terminal window.
  • Rename the current Firefox user profile directory. Command:

    Code: Select all

    mv $HOME/.mozilla $HOME/.mozilla.bak
    Note:
This step can be reverted easily later on by following these steps:
+ close Firefox in case it currently running
+ rename the previous Firefox profile directory back: mv $HOME/.mozilla.bak $HOME/.mozilla
  • Launch Firefox. Firefox will create a new profile on startup using its built-in default settings.
Load the page http://patchwork-synth.com/. Does Flash work?
Right click on the Flash animation? Does Flash still crash?
  • In case the problem is gone, then the root cause is really some misconfiguration in your previous Firefox profile.
In case the problem persists even now with FF 57.0, Flash 27.0.0187 and a fresh profile, then I am a bit clueless.
Best regards,
Karl
