[WORKAROUND] I need to roll back Firefox now.

Post by pendrifter »

This latest version 57 "quantum" makes ProfileSwitcher legacy, and I use ProfileSwitcher for pretty much everything. Please assist. Thank you.

What you can try is installing the .deb packages /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_56.0+linuxmint1+sonya_amd64.deb and /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox-locale-en_56.0+linuxmint1+sonya_amd64.deb, if you still have them, then placing firefox and firefox-locale-en on hold.

I don't know how long you can delay this or if the legacy plug-ins will be restored.

@WarfRat - You beat me :)

If this helps:

I saw a thread on this subject and if you look in your apt cache directory you might find the previous version deb files still there. I think there are two of them.

/var/cache/apt/archives

See if there there and uninstall FF and then reinstall from the /var/cache/apt/archives

I would look at installing Firefox ESR.
Firefox 56 won't receive security patches much longer.

Hi "pendrifter",

I have not installed the new Firefox 57 yet, but previous versions of Firefox had a command flag of "-p" or "-P" for startup firefox's built-in profile manager. You can test to see if the new version also has this by closing Firefox if it is open, and then bringing up a console terminal and typing in "firefox -p" or "firefox -P". You can also create a new desktop shortcut launcher with this command.

Nice, this is a potential work-around. It's giving me the option of launching my old profiles. Now if I can just figure out a way to launch multiple profiles at once and/or launch them within the browser, ProfileManager made it so easy.

I just bookmarked "about:profiles" in my default browser profile, and that works well enough.

Code: Select all

firefox -P profile_name -new-instance

That's what I was thinking as well. I haven't set it up yet myself, but it been touted for a while as more robust Mozilla supported way to handle it.

Nice. Thanks. Guess I don't need Profile Manager after all.
