Firefox 57 Quantum -- add-ons

Post by cecilieaux »

I thought it would be useful to record how add-ons are faring. Not well. Why didn't Mozilla do this BEFORE "upgrading"?

Tab Mix Plus -- not updated. No viable replacement yet.

NoSquint Plus -- "forgets" per site

FEBE, CLEO, OPIE -- these excellent profile backup tools are gone, no replacement

DownThemAll --> Bulk Media Downloader. Have to test.

Speed Dial (Josep del Rio) --> GroupSpeedDial (also imports from Speed Dial [FVD] and .json bookmark files)

Stylish --> Stylus (works fine)

Re: Firefox 57 Quantum -- add-ons

Post by Appoloin »

I run only few extensions

uBlock Original (an add blocker) -> WebExtension version

No Script -> WebExtension version became available today

Video DownloadHelp -> WebExtension version

Flashgot -> Not available

Flashgot is the one I trying to replace. The replacement needs to pass the URL to jDownloader, now there is a extension called "Download with JDownloader"(DwJ) but it won't connect to JDownloader and I have installed the helper app and the path was copied from the launcher. So I'm still looking.

Any suggestions?

Update
I got DwJ to connect by adding this "/usr/bin/java -jar" to JDownload2.jar's open with command. But now jDownloader wants every link confirmed or denied. The search for an alternative downloader extension continues

update 2
Found another download extension call MyJDownloader created by the same people own make Jdownloader and it appears to work.

update 3
No Script v10.1.1 is very unstable. Switch over to uMatrix.

I was using around 8 or 10 addons in firefox < 57, but with 57 I'm using these:

Code: Select all

Lightbeam
"Flash and Video Download"
"Flash Video Downloader"
"Self Destroying Cookies"
"uBlock Origin"
The only addon I really miss is "adblock + element blocker" because ublock is buggy and primitive. (Uses less memory than adblock, though! Because it's buggy & primitive!). I turned off media autoplay in about:config, but I'm not sure that's the same as a "flash blocker".

"LIghtbeam" is an "information only" addon (it's great for finding trackers, etc.), and I probably don't need two downloaders...

EUREKA!!! Seems I found a replacement for No Squint Plus, which seems to "forget" per site setting in Quantum.

The alternative? Zoom Page WE

Well, it works - I only wanted the "element blocker"; ublock doesn't have an "expand" (like adblock) so I'd end up blocking 3 or 4 things to block one container.

The other issue was, since I only wanted the element blocker (other stuff already blocked with privoxy), I turned off the (non-element) subscription lists and then the element-block silently quit working (no error msg, etc).

HI "cecilieaux",

I just started using Firefox Quantum last night with my Linux Mint KDE 18.2 system.

It does seem a lot faster, and much better with memory, but I had a lot of "legacy" add-ons, most of which are not working now. I have found some necessary ones that I do use, and some new ones to replace others.

For security and ad blocking
"ublock origin", "Disconnect", "Privacy Badger" or "Privacy Protector Plus" all work in the new version.
cecilieaux wrote:I thought it would be useful to record how add-ons are faring. Not well. Why didn't Mozilla do this BEFORE "upgrading"?
Excellent point, I too think they could have done a lot more to make sure that popular and useful extensions and add-ons were updated and or suitable working replacements were available before this update.
cecilieaux wrote:Tab Mix Plus -- not updated. No viable replacement yet.
This has always been one of my favorite add-ons and they are working on it and other extension add-ons, see link below. Everyone can contact Firefox developers about extensions, add-ons, and feature requests

Mozilla audited Tab Mix Plus for WebExtensions compatibility
https://www.ghacks.net/2017/04/06/mozil ... atibility/

I did find this really nice add-on "FoxyTab" with really nice right click Tab options.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/user/azbb/

New Tab Override - customize new tab
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... -override/

I used to be able to copy a web page link location by right clicking a tab (even one I was not on), but now there is a menu key "..." next to the web address box with that option. And FoxyTab provides this and many other tab right click options.

And for those of us that have many open web page tabs, multiple tab rows, or a working left or right side "tab tree" extension or add-on is a must have feature; and there are some options now.

Tree Style Tab
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... style-tab/

Vertical tabs, etc...
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... -reloaded/
cecilieaux wrote:NoSquint Plus -- "forgets" per site
I am not familiar with this add-on, but anyone can easily increase or decrease the web page fonts and stuff, using "ctrl+" or "ctrl-", or holding down the control key and using mouse wheel (forward and backwards).
cecilieaux wrote:FEBE, CLEO, OPIE -- these excellent profile backup tools are gone, no replacement
"Febe" was an excellent program for backing up Firefox and all extensions and add-ons. Of course anyone can backup their hidden ".mozilla" folder to do that too. And, if you use the "sync" option, that will sync all extensions, add-ons, bookmarks, etc...
cecilieaux wrote:DownThemAll --> Bulk Media Downloader. Have to test.
There are still some of these, which I have not tested yet either to see if they work. like Bulk Media Downloader,

Of Course anyone can use the "youtube-dl" and Youtube-dlg" applcations.

I installed these below and none worked until I installed the Flash Video Downloader (fvd) Linux deb file, restarted FF, then it and one of the others started working?

YouTube Video and Audio Downloader (WebEx)
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... ader_webx/

Flash video downloader
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... ownloader/

Had to download this linux deb file and install it and restart the browser, but now that works.
http://fvdmedia.com/installation-guide-linux-unix

1-Click YouTube Video Download
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... deo-downl/

cecilieaux wrote:Speed Dial (Josep del Rio) --> GroupSpeedDial (also imports from Speed Dial [FVD] and .json bookmark files)
I personally never liked Speed Dial, but there is this:

New Tab Overrrider - customize new tab
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... -override/

New Tab Tools by Geoff Lankow
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... tab-tools/
cecilieaux wrote:Stylish --> Stylus (works fine)
Never used this, so cannot comment.

Extensions and add-ons that I use that work in the new Firefox. Had to restart Firefox for some, and or go into addon settings and preferences to personalize.

Personas Plus
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... onas-plus/

Language translation extensions and add-ons

To Google Translate
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... translate/

Google Translator for Firefox
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... r-firefox/

s3 translate
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... ranslator/

etc...

Copy all tabs - can save to text file or paste into an email to yourself.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... b-urls-we/

Text case converter to change all uppercase, or lowercase, characters to various options, like "TitleCase" addon
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... titlecase/

User Agent switcher
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... r-revived/

Play videos with local multi-media player, like MPV or VLC, etc...
Send to MPV
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... pv-player/

ff2mpv
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ff2mpv/

YouTube 2 Player
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/yt2p/

VPN browser add-ons
+1 for Hoxx VPN

Here are some extensions and add-ons that I would like updated or new ones created:
If anyone knows of replacements or other options for these, please let me know.

I really want a "status bar" at the bottom of browsers where I can place extension and add-on icons, and other stuff which "Status-4-Evar" (s4e) was great for that.

Something to list all installed extensions, like "Extension List Dumper 2"
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... 2/?src=api

NewScrollbars (aka NoiaScrollbars) - allows user to change scroll bar colors
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... crollbars/

Private Tab (Like Private Window)

Firefox Passwords exporter

Hope this helps ...

I used Privoxy for quite a while some years ago before switching to ABP. At that time, Privoxy wouldn't filter https content but https sites were quite few. Anyway, thanks to Privoxy. I had to learn about regex and globbing :)

Thank you for your excellent review of my queries and your suggestions, phd21.

As to sync, Firefox seems to overlay everything so you end up with lots of duplicates. Chrome doesn't. Don't understand the difference.

HI "cecilieaux",

I just found this Firefox add-on (which I have not yet tried).

Chrome Store Foxified
"Enables the Google Chrome Store and Opera Addons Website for Firefox. Point and click to install Opera/Chrome extensions straight into Firefox."

"No Google account is needed for this to work. If you do want to install the addon permanently, you will need an account on this website (https://addons.mozilla.org) - this will allow the addon to be "signed"."

NoSquint has stopped being developed sometime ago, so there's no web extension version.
The advised replacement was Zoom Page which, as you found out, is compatible with FF 57.

If you're talking about uBlock Origin you need to have your brain examined.

Here are some extensions and add-ons that I would like updated or new ones created:
If anyone knows of replacements or other options for Sthese, please let me know.
.......................
NewScrollbars (aka NoiaScrollbars) - allows user to change scroll bar colors
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... crollbars/
From Firefox 57 and onwards, it's interface can only be customized via CSS tweaking...
https://github.com/Aris-t2/CustomCSSfor ... firefox-57
You can try editing / tweaking the css files provided in the github repo above in order to more or less match what you were using before...

I also used NoiaScrollbars in Firefox 56 and previous versions, in order to increase the size of the vertical scrollbar (and furthermore, to colorize it...):
Now i resorted to this one here...had to tweak it a bit to eventually match my taste:

Thank you for your reply. This looks very interesting, but I have not yet been able to change my scrollbar colors using the information in those links. I edited "userChrome.js" item "L49" to change the colors to blue or red and ".5", and I have cleared the Firefox cache, and restarted, but still no color. Could you please provide step by step instructions? And or perhaps provide your "chrome" folder with the required files to change the scrollbar? The links seem to have more than one "userChrome.js" file too?

Code: Select all

<tr>
        <td id="L49" class="blob-num js-line-number" data-line-number="49"></td>
        <td id="LC49" class="blob-code blob-code-inner js-file-line"><span class="pl-s"> background-color: rgba(0, 0, 221, 0.5)!important;\</span></td>
      </tr>
Thank you,
Phil

Hi Phil, here's what i came up with via lots of error & trial...(as i'm not really much familiar with either javascript or even just css), most of it is based on the reddit comments' above...
I've changed the background-color to rgba(8, 146, 208, 1), aka so-called 'electric blue'...

The major hassle with this method (via extracting the above under .mozilla/firefox/your-profile/chrome), is that you don't get a realtime preview of the edits, hence you need to constantly clear up the .mozilla/cache contents & restart firefox for them to be effective...

Replace userChrome.js from the attached folder with the FloatingScrollbar.uc.js provided over at reddit if you want to start tweaking it from it's default settings...

PS: You'll also find that under Tools a new label item will appear, "Schwebende Scrollbar", giving you the ability to enable / disable it on-the-fly...

Again, thank you. I just copied your "chrome" folder from the zip archive file folder to underneath my profile folder underneath ".mozilla" home folder, and it worked perfectly. :D

Only I will change the default scrollbar to a little larger than 6px.
