Mendeley cannot start (guess: SSLv2 problem) (updated)

Post by donar1919 »

Hi everybody!

This is my first post, so please be lenient if I have forgotten to include certain information - I have tried to be as clear and comprehensive as possible.

I started using Mendeley for referencing, and while it worked just fine on the first day of use, on my second day I've run into an error when trying to start Mendeley. When trying to run it, the program does not start, and instead shows an error message saying only that the program has run into problems. No further information and no error code are provided by the message, but below I've included the terminal output when running mendeleydesktop:

Code: Select all

QSslSocket: cannot resolve SSLv2_client_method
QSslSocket: cannot resolve SSLv2_server_method
QLayout: Attempting to add QLayout "" to ToolBarActionWidget "", which already has a layout
QLayout: Attempting to add QLayout "" to ToolBarActionWidget "", which already has a layout
Qt WebEngine Plugins directory not found. Trying fallback directory... Plugins as for example video codecs MAY NOT work.
Crash handler wrote minidump /home/c/.local/share/data/Mendeley Ltd./Mendeley Desktop/minidumps/4cc549b6-b517-0c18-4eb44fa6-53066dea.dmp
I'm running Linux Mint 18.1 Serena, xfce 64-bit, on an HP Omen with dual boot. Some further information is attached below.

After some use of Google, I guess that SSLv2 is erroneously required to load - however, the only bug-fix I could find online refers to OpenSSL 1.0.1f (https://askubuntu.com/questions/711863/ ... n-terminal), and I'm not able to transfer the reported fix to my version, which is OpenSSL 1.0.2g (1 Mar 2016).
Re-installing Mendeley has also not solved the problem.

I would be extremely appreciative of any help or advice! Please know that I'm a noob when it comes to this, so dumbed-down answers would be great.
Thank you all very much in advance, and
Best wishes,
Chris

*UPDATE (24.11.2017):
Today, it randomly worked again. As always, the error message was prompted for a split second, but then Mendeley would actually suddenly start. The terminal output when running it was:

Code: Select all

QSslSocket: cannot resolve SSLv2_client_method
QSslSocket: cannot resolve SSLv2_server_method
QLayout: Attempting to add QLayout "" to ToolBarActionWidget "", which already has a layout
QLayout: Attempting to add QLayout "" to ToolBarActionWidget "", which already has a layout
Qt WebEngine Plugins directory not found. Trying fallback directory... Plugins as for example video codecs MAY NOT work.
Which is literally the same output as when it doesn't work, only that no "minidump" was created. I'm very puzzled by this, and would still highly appreciate any hints on how to fix this issue (since most of the time, Mendeley does not start up). If any further information is required, please do not hesitate to let me know! Again, many thanks for your time.
