People far smarter than I am will tell you not to install it.....I'll let them tell you why. :?

Anyway here's the Quick Start Guide with install instructions.

Here's an article telling you why you shouldn't install an AV in Linux, written by forum member Pjotr.

According to the link below : "Linux doesn't get viruses" — It's a Myth.

Can this infect a machine that is not logged in as root?

Yes, nothing is 100% secure . . . but I think that Pjotr knows more about Linux security than most anyone on this forum.

He certainly knows more about it than I do. All I know is what I read on the Internet. But then what Pjotr wrote is what I read on the Internet too so........ :P

I think we have a tendency to feel bullet proof when we're on Linux and I think we need to be not so over confident just out of caution. As you say nothing is 100% secure.

Some people coming from Windows do feel "naked" without some sort of Security Suite running so I do understand the OP's desire to install the ESET AV program. I have used ESET Nod 32 on Windows and it is competent although not outstanding.
