What kind of DVD are we talking about here?

It sounds, as if this is a dvd with Windows-program(s), otherwise there would nothing install in Windows. But Linux cannot use Windows-programs, except perhaps after installing wine.
Do you possibly speak about a Windows game?

Thank you for the replies. Firstly I must correct wrong information. The original query should read: Mint 18.1. Hi Moem, the dvd is educational, interactive and contains mainly text with occasional art work. Hi Cosmo, I noticed that Wine may help to "read" the dvd, but being new to Linux, I'm wary of opening a hornets nest I'll not be able to handle. Hence assistance to download Wine will be appreciated.

That's the easy part. Wine can be installed through the Software Manager. But it seems likely that this is when the hard part starts...

So Cosmo was right to assume that this is meant for Windows and the DVD contains software... and in that case, what is it called?

Truth be told, your chances of being able to make this work under Linux seem to be small.

Thank you, Moem. If Wine doesn't work, I can get some help to set up a partition and add an appropriate MS version to exclusively run the software. I suppose the matter may be considered SOLVED.

Alternative - and possibly more comfortable: Install VirtualBox and install Windows inside. Now you can run the DVD in its native environment - side by side with your Mint.
