[SOLVED GAVE UP] mintUpdate: no process found (upgrade from 18.2 to 18.3)

Post by Flemur » Mon Dec 04, 2017 4:44 pm

Edit: I've decided the "mintupdate" software is too buggy and kludgey to use, so shall not try to use it; it's just one weird thing after another, and useful information is completely absent.
Now mintupdate is prompting for a password to run synaptic, but bash gets the password.

I was trying to upgrade from 18.2 to 18.3 with mintupdate, and I get this:

Code: Select all

$ mintupdate
$ mintUpdate: no process found
The "Upgrade to Mint 18.3 Sylvia" does not appear in the menu. Everything else seems OK.
https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3462

I was getting errors before about dbus:

Code: Select all

** (mintUpdate.py:5328): WARNING **: Couldn't register with accessibility bus: Did not receive a reply.
...
GLib.GError: gtk-icon-theme-error-quark: Icon 'mintupdate-level1' not present in theme Mint-X (0)
-- Exception occurred in the refresh thread: <class 'GLib.GError'>
So purged and reinstalled mintupdate, but still get the "no prcess found" and no "Upgrade" menu entry.

Regarding "no process found": This obvious: mintupdate <> mintUpdate. There must be no capital U inside.

Regarding the missing upgrade menu entry: Do you see an update for mint-upgrade-info from V 1.0.9 -> 1.1.0 in the update history?

When I run "mintupdate" it responds with "mintUpdate".
Regarding the missing upgrade menu entry: Do you see an update for mint-upgrade-info from V 1.0.9 -> 1.1.0 in the update history?
No.

I had been doing this:

Code: Select all

$ mintupdate
$
** (mintUpdate.py:9787): WARNING **: Couldn't register with accessibility bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
mintUpdate: no process found
I can make the "bus" error go away with

Code: Select all

$ export NO_AT_BRIDGE=1
$ mintupdate
$
No errors (although NO_AT_BRIDGE had been set before w/o changing anything) - but also no "Upgrade to 18.3" entry.

If I don't NO_AT_BRIDGE=1, then

Code: Select all

$ mintupdate
$
** (mintUpdate.py:11944): WARNING **: Couldn't register with accessibility bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
mintUpdate: no process found

(mintUpdate.py:11944): Gtk-WARNING **: Could not find the icon 'mintupdate-checking-ltr'. The 'hicolor' theme
was not found either, perhaps you need to install it.
You can get a copy from:
	http://icon-theme.freedesktop.org/releases
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/mintUpdate.py", line 713, in run
    pixbuf = theme.load_icon("mintupdate-level" + str(update.level), 22, 0)
GLib.GError: gtk-icon-theme-error-quark: Icon 'mintupdate-level1' not present in theme Mint-X (0)
-- Exception occurred in the refresh thread: <class 'GLib.GError'>
That last portion happens again if I do a "Refresh":

Code: Select all

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/mintUpdate.py", line 713, in run
    pixbuf = theme.load_icon("mintupdate-level" + str(update.level), 22, 0)
GLib.GError: gtk-icon-theme-error-quark: Icon 'mintupdate-level1' not present in theme Mint-X (0)
-- Exception occurred in the refresh thread: <class 'GLib.GError'>
and it doesn't show any updates at all (the main page is empty: w/o the dbus error is shows some updates, but no OS upgrade).

the only reference I have for that icon (mintupdate-level-1) is this, in the miny-x theme there is not but I have no problems

Code: Select all

The output is not consistent with the command (why ever). You can see in /usr/bin, that the command for calling the updater is mintupdate (no capitalized U). But this is obviously not your main problem (and the Updater should anyway launch automatically after login).

No.
And here is your main problem. Without the update for mint-upgrade-info the system cannot know anything about the upgrade path. I wonder why you don't get it. What does apt update give?

Possibly the problem is related with your GTK.

No errors (although NO_AT_BRIDGE had been set before w/o changing anything) - but also no "Upgrade to 18.3" entry.
Maybe try by first installing mint-upgrade-info manually? I have NO_AT_BRIDGE=1 permanently in my .profile, but it hasn't ever caused me problems with mintupdate...

EDIT: ...i've added in attachment the mintupdate-level .svgs from /hicolor/scalable/status, in case it fails due to them not being present somehow...

No.
Bear in mind the upgrade for 18.3 Xfce hasn't been released yet (only the beta).
So, while I see this update in an Xfce text box I run on a USB drive, it doesn't offer the 18.3 upgrade.
