Firefox 57.0.1 on Mint 13 System (Solved)

We have someone here still sitting on Mint 13.There appear to be valid business reasons for staying on Mint 13 for the next 6/12 months. Obviously updates are no longer issued. I looked at Firefox and it is sitting on 52.0.2. Can I update this to the latest, 57.0.1 and what would be the best way to do this if it is possible? The system is behind the server firewall. Thanks, MichaelJ...

I strongly doubt, that there can exist any rational reason to stay with a system full of security leaks. The time for LM 13 ended already 9 months ago.

Currently he is porting a major chunk of software from Python 2.7 to Python 3.6 as there are issues of lack of backward compatability with some modules if he tries to run it on Mint17/18.Patching is not the answer but going to a newer Python is.

So is it possible to run the latest Firefox or not?

Possible: yes.

But I will give no support for such a bad thing. The explanation is none, as LM 13 is already 9 months out of support and the end of life time is known since 5 years.

since I've assisted some Folks who wished to continue to use their older win-xp PCs
:o
this can be done - - you have to manually extract the *.tar.gz archive,
& then manually move that folder to it's correct destination:
/usr/lib/firefox/
it would pay to create an backup folder in that final destination,
- in case something does go wrong.
this is what I'd been doing on my LM09 Laptop, until recently.

but in this case, you may wish to consider using the Firefox ESR version:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/o ... tions/faq/
rather than trying to update to FF57 itself.

in the case of my LM13 Laptop, that was still receiving FF updates,
but, inevitably, that update will cease, if it already hasn't done so.
( LM13 is no longer supported )
and it will then have to be manually downloaded, extracted, and then setup.

With such n attempt the next candidate for something like that is waiting, KRACK (only one of the last examples) is and will be never fixed in LM 13.

Hmm Cosmo. that's just a Browser Hijack, & not a Operating System Hijack,
& which is much worse.
:(

in this case, if the OP is intent on doing this modus operandi ,
then it may pay to assist them, in order to alleviate any potential issues.
:)

This is only one example of the many security fixes, which have been provided in the last months. Another one is Dirty Cow, where just a patch for the last patch has been provided.
