Which kernels get security updates?

Post by Kurt3162 » Wed Dec 06, 2017 11:44 am

AFAIK (please correct me if I'm wrong), kernels don't receive backported fixes (for vulnerabilities) unless they are LTS kernels.

Which kernels are considered LTS and get security updates?
Where can one find this information?

The kernel developers have a number of longterm maintained kernel releases. You can find these here: https://www.kernel.org/category/releases.html.

However, Ubuntu's kernel team does its own kernel maintenance and may maintain other kernel releases than upstream (i.e., the kernel developers) for a longer period. Linux Mint 18.x use Ubuntu 16,04's kernels. You can find the overview of the Ubuntu kernel team's maintenance periods here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Support# ... el_Support

Excellent, thank you.
I have a little problem translating this to what I see in the Update Manager though.
For instance, the Ubuntu page states (at least I think it does) that for 14.04 "Trusty Tahr" (Mint 17.3 I'm using) the 4.4 kernel is supported up to 2019. Now which of the 4.4 kernels are they talking about? In the Update Manager there is a slew of them, starting with 4.4.0-21 and going up to 4.4.0-98 (or 4.4.0-101?).

The kernels shown in Update Manager (this is for Mint 18.x versions) are 4.4, 4.8, 4.10, 4.11, and 4.13. Of these, 4.4 is the LTS version. 4.8 is already end-of-life, so no more security updates there. 4.10, 4.11, and 4.13 are currently still getting updates, but they are not LTS. (Looks like the next LTS kernel is 4.15.)

xenopeek, or anyone else in the know: How come kernel 4.11 isn't shown in Ubuntu's kernel graph chart linked to above?

I was editing my post while you posted. As I said, I'm on Mint 17.3 (Ubuntu 14.04 "Trusty Tahr"), and use a 4.4 kernel. But there are several 4.4 kernels. Which one is the one getting the security updates?
Or am I supposed to always pick the latest 4.4.x kernel? Which would in this case be 4.4.0-101?

Always pick the latest which as you said is 4.4.0-101.

In your options for Update Manager you might want to make sure that "Always show kernel updates" is checked. That way updated 4.4 kernels will show up in the usual place that all other software updates do.

Where would I find that option? I neither see it in the preferences nor in the kernel sub-window.

Are you sure it's not there? I can't find my Mint 17 disc, or I would do a live session to check it myself. I'm pretty sure that option is there somewhere in 17. Here's where it is in 18:

No, in 17.3 there are only 6 options, the last two (kernel) ones are missing.
It isn't really a problem, it's not like there is a new kernel upgrade every week.
Thank you for your efforts.
