My Firefox just got hyjacked! security alert code 055BCCAC9FEC

Postby Destry » Thu Dec 07, 2017 12:11 am

Just putting this out there and don't know if any other LM users have had this happen.
I have not done anything with it yet but after I post this message I am going to do a clean install of Firefox and go from there. Running LM17.3 and current version FF

Oh and as I have the IP addy from this alert window as it is in the address bar. I may just do a little exploring with the tools I have in my Kali Linux installation.

The pricks could have atleast customized it for Linux, the Windows part was the scariest!

Back up and running with a clean install. Removed the hidden Mozilla folder from the home folder after I used the software manager to remove Firefox. Reinstalled and good to go...

Hi "Destry",

Usually, if you see a message like this in your browser, do not click anything from the browser including pop-up messages or pop-up windows, and "kill" the browser using various methods. In KDE you can hit "Ctrl+Alt+Esc" and your cursor will turn into the Kill Application (pirate) cursor, then just click the application and or its pop-up windows to kill it immediately (hit ESc if you don't want to kill anything). Then you can just restart your browser. If you know what website you were on, or email you were looking at, and or specifically what you were doing, then tell us.

If you are concerned that something may have been infected (extremely unlikely in Linux), you can use a bootup rescue disc to scan your system overnight, like Kaspersky, Avira, Dr. Web, etc...

Hope this helps ...

This is just a scam. Simply use pkill firefox to kill the browser session. Nothing more need be done, apart from making sure you don't visit that site again.

Hi Destry,
Do you have a multiboot install or just pure Linux?

Just learned something new! Thanks phd21! Didn't know about the "Ctrl+Alt+Esc" trick. used the "Ctrl+Alt+Del" many times in the past.

There is nothing wrong with your system. That is just a tricky web page. It even mentions windows.
No need for concern.
My good old PC:

Pure Linux on this machine and only one os. no multiboot. I am using Plesk Server on this machine but not outside my private network.

Using tripple boot on my laptop though. win7, LM 18.2, and Kali Linux. No issues with it.

Yeah... but it still bugged me. I have been wanting a fresh clean Firefox anyway. I wasn't sweating over it. 8)

I have got another issue though that is irritating. It involves my Plesk installation and Firefox. Creating a new thread for that.

the one thing that you could to - - is to Reset Firefox, back to it's default:
- Help - TroubleShooting Information - Refresh Firefox
if you use the other option - - Restart with Add-ons Disabled, then that will remove any extra add-ons.

then, try using your Firefox, as normal, as you shouldn't see that message, again.

You might also consider clearing the browser cache & history to prevent any "left overs" from accidently steering you to that site or page again.

Hi "Destry",

You are welcome...

Using the "Firejail" sandboxing application with all Internet-enabled applications like browsers and messengers will prevent any damage to your system.

It is rare for Linux users to even see these messages, but I had one once claiming a "ransomware" infection in Google Chrome, which I thought was related to a "hot girls in bikinis new tab page" extension add-on that I like, but it was not. I killed the browser, then restarted it, and it worked fine. That night, I booted up and ran Kaspersky's rescue disc to make sure nothing was affected by viruses or malware, and it did not find anything.

Clearing the browser cache is also a good idea. Do you remember what it was that you were doing when this happened?

There are other posts in this forum on how to kill an application for any edition and version of Linux Mint including creating shortcuts like "Ctrl+Alt+Esc" which KDE systems have built-in.

Code: Select all

killall firefox
