System password Linux Mint Olivia

Post by johanjoostvandaalen » Sun Dec 10, 2017 12:36 pm

How could I change the password of Linux Mint Olivia? I could login my system by giving a hard reboot, because I don´t know the password.

Olivia is obsolete, and no longer supported. It has known security issues that will not be addressed. I strongly recommend that you install one of the currently supported releases: Mint 17.x, which is supported until April 2019, or 18.x, which is supported until April 2021.

Have a look at this article from the Easy Linux Tips Project for some ideas.

P.S. Note that support for Linux Mint 15 "Olivia" ended almost four years ago.

Joe Football,

Thank you for your answer. I had googled that page just before and I have tried it too. The first screen has succeeded, but the one which is needed by the administration of the system has not. How come? Later I have seen that the first screen is not responding to the new password anymore again. How does this come?

Jimalyn,

Thank you for your answer at first. But Mint Olivia is working fine for the rest of it. On my other computer I have Ubuntu 16.04 lts which I use for the main computer work. How could I install the new version of Ubuntu Mint ? Is it possible to do that online or do I need a dvd of it?

For you to have a new version of Linux Mint, you'll need to install it from either a DVD or a USB drive.

I have changed the password algain already. In LinuxMint Olivia is all working fine now with the new password. The same I have done with another version of Linux Ubuntu 14.04. There is the password at the start of the system not the same as with all administration work. How..? What can I do with that too?

And we'll be here to talk you through it. In Dutch if need be.
There are also plenty of tutorials and installation guides.

It may be working "fine", but it is insecure.

All the accumulated security holes and privacy leaks work even finer! :!:
