[SOLVED] wine upgrade problem

Post by anubis2497 »

so linux mint is still useing wine 1.6.2 currently im on mint 18.3 kde and i have made this change before to update wine and i alwayse end up wwith the same problem
but so i would like to upgrade wine to the latest stable i think its 2.0.3
but anyway every single time i have removed wine and all of my old packages first as advised then i alwayse install the ppa and update then install the newest stable version of wine but there is this problem that removes all my wine menu icons
and even if i run winecfg i never get any icons back also note when i install any wine application after the upgrade it NEVER places icons in the menu for the nerw program i assume because all my wine menus are missing
why dose this prblem still happen even to this day and how can i finally fis it?

The best solution I've found is to install and use playonlinux ,

Code: Select all

sudo apt install playonlinux
it will be in the game section of the menu. it allows you to install most versions of wine so if one program needs one version and another a newer or older one you can do that, plus it separates programs into their own virtual files. makes life easier in general when working with wine. when it is installed and running click on tools and manage wine versions. Good luck.

I second the playonlinux recommendation, it allowed me to effortlessly install photoshop and lightroom which is a real chore without playonlinux.

Games are funny things - each of them may require a different wine version to work with.
But I find Playonlinux a good start. The other alternative is to install windows in a virtual machine like virtual box.
good luck.
Happy Holidays :)
