[SOLVED] Suspend / Hibernate not working

Post by david_h » Sat Jan 06, 2018 2:21 pm

I have recently installed Mint 18.3 with Mate on a Sony Vaio laptop (spec below) which is all working fine except that Suspend and Hibernate do not work either from the Quit menu or when the lid is closed. I have spent several days trying to find a way round it without success. I have tried with the graphics hardware switch set to Intel graphics and set to Nvidia graphics with both the proprietary driver and the open source one. I have also run Mint+Cinamon and the 32 bit version of Mint+Mate from USB flash drives with exactly the same results. It seems to be a fairly common issue on the forums but I haven't seen a solution yet. Syslog entries below show suspend failing (twice?) but I am not knowledgeable enough to know if they give enough information to ascertain the reason for the failure. I have not installed any additional software except drivers for the Ricoh webcam which I got from the Ubuntu help site.

UPDATE
Solved by trial and error! It appears to be an issue with linux kernel version 4.10. Version 4.04 works OK, so I re-installed using 18.1 instead of 18.3 and so far have had no problems. Not really a very long term solution but it should be OK for a couple of years, until 18 runs out of support.
